US: Saudi Arabia, UAE played major role in airstrikes against IS in Syria

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, who joined the anti-jihadist coalition led by the US, played a major role in the recent air strikes in Syria against the Islamic State, the Pentagon said Thursday.

Ten of the 16 planes that bombed Islamic State targets in Syria on Wednesday night were Saudi or Emirati and they dropped 80 percent of the tonnage of explosives dropped, said the spokesman for the Pentagon, Admiral John Kirby.

American planes sent 18 of the 23 bombs dropped during the raids but the two Arab powers have used more powerful ammunition.

The son of the heir to the Saudi Arabian throne has personally put the royal seal of approval on the attacks against Isis, by taking part in bombing runs.

Prince Khaled bin Salman, the son of Crown Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz, has been pictured in the cockpit of his Tornado jet after piloting it in strikes against the terrorist group in Syria.

He was joined in the skies by the United Arab Emirate's first female air force pilot, Major Mariam Al Mansouri, 35, whose F-16 fighter was one of several from a group of Arab nations that are blitzing Isis.

Fighters from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Jordan, Bahrain, Qatar, France and the U.S have all flown bombing runs over Syria, with Britain set to add its firepower to the alliance in the coming days.

The Saudi prince is thought to have piloted one of four attack aircraft from the Kingdom in a third night of missions against Isis, also known as Islamic State, according to The Times.

There are thousands of princes in Saudi Arabia, but Prince Khaled is from the very top tier. His father is the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of Saudi Arabia - and his father was the King.

It reported that the prince's participation in the attacks was revealed by the Saudi government not only to reassure the West that it is determined to take a firm stand against extremist groups, but to send a message to the Saudi population that Isis is an enemy of the Kingdom.

Meet UAE female pilot who bombed Daesh

Mariam Al Mansouri of Abu Dhabi is the first Emirati female pilot in the country’s airforce. She has also become the first female pilot in the region to bomb Daesh after she took part in an Arab-Western coalition attack on Daesh in North Syria this week.

“I the beginning, I had not expected to become a pilot of F16,” Mariam said in a film broadcast by Abu Dhabi television on Wednesday night.

“But thanks God, our dream which has been fulfilled thanks to the support of the leadership, government and our instructors….….I would like to say that both Emirati men and women have the right to work in any field with determination, faith, resolution and sincerity to serve our beloved homeland.”

Female fighter pilot leads UAE mission against ISIS in Syria

The UAE has officially confirmed that its mission against Islamic State (ISIS) fighters in Syria was led by Major Mariam Al Mansouri, the Emirates' first female fighter pilot.

Speaking on the Morning Joe show on MSNBC, US Ambassador Yousef Al Otaiba said: "I can officially confirm that the UAE strike mission on Monday night was led by female fighter pilot Mariam Al Mansouri."

"She is a fully qualified, highly trained, combat-ready pilot and she led the mission," he said.

Al Mansouri, 35, graduated from Abu Dhabi's Khalifa bin Zayed Air College in 2007 and is a veteran pilot of F-16 warplanes.

In an interview with The National earlier this year, Al Mansouri said: "It was my aspiration. Ever since I finished high school, I wanted to learn flying because it was something that I liked in the first place.”

She was born in Abu Dhabi and graduated from high school before completing a degree in English literature from UAE University.

The UAE joined four other Arab nations - Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Qatar, Bahrain - and the United States to launch strikes against members of ISIS in Syria.

The United Arab Emirates’ first female fighter pilot took part in strikes against ISIS this week- Ambassador to the U.S., Yousef al Otaiba makes comments on this event.

When fighter jets from the United Arab Emirates took part in airstrikes against the Islamic State in Syria on Monday night, the mission was led by a woman, the country’s ambassador to the United States said Thursday morning.

The pilot, Maj. Mariam Al Mansouri, was among the first women to graduate from the Emirates’ air force academy after it began to admit women, and became the nation’s first female fighter pilot.

She is a fully qualified, highly trained, combat-ready pilot, and she led the mission,” the ambassador, Yousef Al Otaiba, said on the MSNBC program “Morning Joe.”

When American tanker-jet pilots contacted the flight to arrange for midair refueling, Mr. Otaiba said, they paused for about 20 seconds after hearing a woman’s voice in reply.

“I think it’s important for us moderate Arabs, moderate Muslims, to step up and say this is a threat against us,” Mr. Otaiba said of the Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL.

The United States-led coalition that mounted airstrikes against the Islamic State on Syrian territory this week includes the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Jordan. On Thursday, coalition aircraft struck 12 small oil refineries controlled by the Islamic State, Pentagon officials said.

Major Mansouri, 35, was profiled in The National, an Abu Dhabi newspaper, in June. She said she had wanted to become a pilot since high school, but had to wait until women were permitted. She earned an undergraduate degree in English literature and worked for the armed forces in other capacities.

She graduated from Khalifa bin Zayed Air College in 2007, the newspaper reported. She now flies the Block 60 model of the American-built F-16 fighter jet.

In the newspaper profile, the major offered some advice for women who wanted to follow in her footsteps: “Be prepared, as it is a time- and effort-consuming field that requires a great deal of passion

nice 1, but I'm still hoping this does not devolve into a campaign against the Syrian military, in which case I'll do a speedy u-turn and hope they all get shot down :P

UAE, Saudi and US strike ISIL oil refineries

The US, UAE and Saudi Arabia have bombed oil refineries operated by ISIL in Syria to choke off their funding, killing more than a dozen militants.

Fighter jets from the three countries attacked the oil installations in eastern Syria, broadening their campaign beyond military targets to economic assets.

But two senior US security officials said the US had no information to support the threat.

ISIL, which has imposed its brutal rule over large parts of Syria and Iraq, has been using such small-scale mobile refineries to generate up to US$2 million (Dh7.34m) in revenues a day, Washington said.

The US-led coalition has carried out about 20 strikes in Syria since the start of the week. Washington has launched nearly 200 strikes in Iraq since early August.

Pentagon spokesman Rear Admiral John Kirby said Saudi and UAE warplanes played the leading role in Wednesday’s attack on the oil installations, devoting more planes and dumping more bombs than US forces.

Ten warplanes from the two countries flew with six US aircraft in the raids, with 80 per cent of the bomb tonnage delivered by Saudi and UAE planes, Adm Kirby said.

UAE’s female fighter pilot leads airstrikes against ISIL

Yousef Al Otaiba, the UAE’s ambassador to the United States, confirmed on Thursday that the country’s first female fighter pilot was involved in recent action against ISIL.

He discussed the UAE’s commitment in combating ISIL and fighting extremism on the live-broadcast American television show Morning Joe, a weekday morning talk show on MSNBC.

Mr Al Otaiba also confirmed that Major Mariam Al Mansouri, 35, an F-16 pilot, will lead the air strike missions on ISIL.

“I can officially confirm that the UAE strike mission on Monday night was led by female fighter pilot Mariam Al Mansouri,” he said.

“She is a fully qualified, highly trained, combat-ready pilot and she is on a mission.”

The UAE, along with Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Qatar, Bahrain and the United States have allied to launch a series of air strikes against members of ISIL in Syria to combat extremists.

During the show, Mr Al Otaiba said: “We will bring whatever it takes to defeat ISIS [ISIL] and other forms of extremism.”

Mr Al Otaiba said it was important for Arab and Muslim states to stand against ISIL and to see them as the threat they were.

“I think it’s important for us moderate Arabs, moderate Muslims, to step up and say, ‘this is a threat against us’,” he said. “This is more of a threat to us than it is to ISIL. This is a threat to our country, a threat to our way of life.”

Maj Al Mansouri has an undergraduate degree in English literature and is the first woman to join the Khalifa bin Zayed Air College, graduating in 2008.

Her participation in the raid stirred a debate on social media, with supporters posting her picture on Twitter and commending her service.
