Saudi Arabia maybe interested in acquiring 5 Type 209 Submarines

There are only a few submarine producers. Rubin (Russia), DCNS (France), Kockums (Sweden), HDW (Germany), Navantia (Spain), China, USA. Kockums if now part of TKMS, which also owns HDW (and is now strangling Kockums in favor of HDW). My best bet would be Germany (HDW > 214) or DCNS (Scorpene).

Can the Scorpion be superior to the U-214, If the Saudis want to make it perfect?

Saudia should go for what singapore is now buying the U-218 class...simply will serve Saudia Arabia for a long time to come.

We don't trust the German Gov't tbqh.

So no, it is impossible that the Saudis will seriously consider the U-218.

FIrst, one needs to find out what the specs are for 218SG and for 216. Suffice, these are much larger than 212A and 214. WHich begs the question whether that would be a good fit with KSA needs.

Better for KSA is to bring in closer UAE, Oman and Tunisia and Morocco to have JV with Germany on next generation submarines.

Arms exports fall by almost half in five years - The Local

'Anything that swims, goes'

“Especially the Egypt deal has made clear that Germany is willing to deliver certain types of arms,” Wezeman said.

“Considering they have allowed exports to Egypt, there's a good chance that Saudi Arabia would get submarines if they wanted such a deal.

“There's an old German saying in this field, from the former Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher [1974-1992]: 'Anything that swims, goes'.”

Stupid article who pays for old u 209 that much even brand new u 214 cheaper than that

That is 16.5 $ billion for 25 submarines which makes much more sense, with weapons and training included, that's 660 million $ per submarine, It better be the top of the line type 209 with AIP... and latest navigation, electronics, sensors and optics.
And still, the price fits best for 35 to 40 AIP type 209 than 25.
In line with the Unified Arab Army's 10 or so participants, that makes some sense, with +/- 5 subs per participating country, based on need to have.

I don't think that RSAN have the logistical capability nor the need of having such a large subsurface fleet (25?) based on it's threat clarification.

Germany recently barred weapons sales to SA........wonder what they are going to do such a sensitive deal....Submarines.

That is just 5 to 10 for RSAN the rest might be for its Arab allies or to be stationed there, example Morocco in North Africa and any other ally with coast lines. These Subs will be Saudi but manned by the Arab countries nationals or even Saudi nationals or a combination of both.
Nothing sure , just a thought to justify the numbers.

Saudi Arabia eyes buying German submarines: Report

Agence France Presse
BERLIN: Saudi Arabia wants to buy five German submarines for around 2.5 billion euros ($3.4 billion) and more than two dozen more in the future, a newspaper reported Sunday.

Citing unidentified government sources, Sunday's Bild newspaper said Riyadh had its eye initially on buying the five Type 209 submarines, followed long-term by up to 25 submarines in a 12-billion-euro deal.

It said the chancellery had, in a letter to Saudi Arabia in the summer, indicated a swift and sympathetic examination of Riyadh's weapons plans as soon as the new German government was established following September elections.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives are currently locked in negotiations with the centre-left Social Democrats on forming a grand coalition.

A German government spokeswoman, contacted by AFP, declined to comment and would not confirm or deny the reported letter.

In Riyadh, officials do not usually publicly comment on such deals.

Germany's heavy industry giant ThyssenKrupp which, the paper said, would produce the submarines was quoted by Bild as saying there was "no project on submarines for Saudi Arabia".

German arms sales to Saudi Arabia have in the past been criticised by opposition politicians, especially in light of pro-democracy uprisings throughout the Middle East.

For decades Germany declined to sell heavy weapons to Saudi Arabia because of concerns over human rights and fears for Israel's security.

So that amount is for 30 submarines in total.
