In a way I am glad these places had been left alone and only now when being developed with a vision and a plan. I'd definitely visit, not just for the beautiful resorts but also for the untouched historical places.
Me too. My hope is just that the natural beauty of those areas and regions of KSA will remain despite opening up to tourism. It will be a fine balance to reach.
This Huge Tourism industry/vision is not an Industry I wish to invest in...
All of it is based upon the condition that "People wish and can come in"...
Therefore making it sure that Future Regional or/and International relations is stable with the targeted people/countries.
IMO such huge funds could be used in other departments...
Anyway, I may differ on that particular point, I still wish you success.
Better wishing a Brother to succeed than a stranger.
Well, KSA is already in the top 15 of most visited countries in the world and KSA have cordial/non-hostile relations to at least 95%+ of all the world's countries.
Even the countries that we don't have good political relations with nowadays, say Iran being the main one and neighbor, 100.000's upon 100.000's of Iranians arrive each year due to Hajj and Umrah.
So KSA will never have any problems with attracting people from the outside. Not even the case today with very harsh visa rules, that will luckily change very soon.

Also don't forget internal tourism which is also a several billion big industry.
I think that if it mass-tourism occurs in a controlled fashion and helps protect the many heritage sites in KSA (as well as those yet not discovered or poorly studied) and helps diversify the economy further and helps create jobs for locals, this is the right thing to do.
Besides KSA is arguably one of the most beautiful countries in the world and most unexplored and opening up to the world is great PR.
Millions of pilgrims have been visiting KSA in the past many decades but few know the country due to internal travel restrictions. That is a shame.
I think that post such as those below say it all and why KSA needs a vibrant tourism sector that will do the country justice:
I moved to Riyadh from the UK just over a year ago and have been absolutely blown away by this country and everything it has to offer. Before I came here I was so worried about so many things...from wearing an abaya, not knowing the language, not understanding the religion, about getting my hand chopped off or being stoned to death for having a good time (the list went on and got a whole lot more dramatic the closer I got to my leaving date from the UK)
"I spent a lot of time on this subreddit before I came here to see what I could learn about the country. But honestly nothing could really prepare me for it given how little useful and non-scaremongering information there is out there about Saudi Arabia.
I never really post online but after my last weekend (spent road-tripping around Tabuk...yes, as a female, with my two best friends and our MALE tour guide) I feel I have to write down somewhere publicly how awesome I think this country is. It is beautiful. Desert, mountains, incredible rock formations, Nabatean tombs, lush green areas, canyons, the Red Sea...the list goes on and on. And that’s not to mention the hospitality of the people along the way. We were fortunate enough to meet the most wonderful Saudi family who welcomed us into their home and made us feel like we were one of their own.
Of course there is an argument for the things that are bad (or have been bad in the past) about this country. But what country in the world doesn’t have things they are ashamed of or wish it wasn’t linked to the history of the place where they were born. It’s currently an embarrassment to be from the UK, I’ve given up watching the news from there at the moment!
So to sum up...thank you Saudi Arabia for being just the best surprise. I can’t wait to see what else you’re going to offer me over the last couple of months of my time here "
