Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz al-Saud inaugurated the first phase of a border security barrier along the kingdom's northern borders on 5 September.
The Saudi Press Agency reported that the multi-layered barrier runs along 900 km of the northern border and consists of 78 monitoring towers, eight command centres, 10 mobile surveillance vehicles, 32 rapid-response centres, and three rapid intervention squads, all linked by a fibre-optic communications network. It said 3,400 people were being trained to man the barrier by 60 trainers.
A promotional video was released to the media showing the 10 km-deep barrier consists of a sand berm, two fences, and a patrol road that connects the various watchtowers and supporting facilities.
The video included footage of a Mercedes-Benz Unimog truck driving onto a raised platform and deploying a mast-mounted FLIR Systems Ranger HRC thermal imager and what appeared to be a Thales BOR-A ground surveillance radar. A Ranger HRC was also seen at one of the static surveillance towers.
FLIR Systems says the Ranger HRC can detect a man-sized target at more than 10 km and a vehicle at more than 20 km. The BOR-A can detect a person 16 or 19 km away, depending on the version, and a vehicle at 33 or 39 km.
Neither FLIR Systems nor Thales responded to requests for information regarding the extent of their involvement in the Saudi border project.
EADS (now Airbus Military and Space) announced in June 2009 that it had won a contract for "the border security programme covering the full borders of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia". It said the project would be completed in five years and cover 9,000 km of border.
