Saudi Arabia: Aiming toward a knowledge-based economy

How ease of doing business is related to building a knowledge economy?

And this 'competitiveness' you are referring to is not the 'competition' I am referring to.

Oil as a resource assumed importance only after 1960s and US started building its economy much before that.

Then please do explain the competition you are referring to. As I thought you meant it on pure scientific economical terms.

Competition is survival of the fittest, beating others to stand alone at the top. It is a mind set.

Competitiveness are certain rule that gives level playing field to all players

I guess the competition jade is talking about is the competition between companies. The competitiveness in the above article refers to how easy and favourable saudi arab is for new investment.

I dont oppose or support his views.

It's like you are saying the doors of scientific competition have been closed to countries that have just started working on them. If that's true, then countries like SK wouldn't have been one of the most developing and advanced countries in the world, who thought that SK cars would compete Japanese and German cars one day 15 years ago? the same thing applies to China and other countries that were 3rd world countries in the near past.

Yes they mean. See the Universities in the west. They attract the brightest of bright. Ex: 10000 applicants apply for only 800 seats at Harvard Business School or in India, 500000 applicants apply for 8000 seats at IITs.

There is no free meal in knowledge economy. Everything has to be earned

Did I mentioned that the doors are closed? What I am saying is that for KSA to be a knowledge economy, it has to work very hard.

Yes, SK could compete with Japan and Germany and emerge a winner. That is why I was saying competition is the key.

Mr. Genius,

That happens in almost all respectable universities in the world where large numbers apply to attend them but few who happen to be the elite ones who succeed. Obviously, you lack logic in your posts my friend.

What is the objective in this world for most people. Its making money right? Competition is a never ending game and what you are saying is of individual success. In the U.S 50% of University graduates are unemployed. As i have stated earlier in many of my posts that what is the point of competition when a system of country is designed to be a failure. The system in the U.S and now in India is the same. I have come to believe that everyone needs to be given equal/fair chance. Like Scandinavian countries where students go to Universities for free, live their happiest lives, and advance equally in global competition is something to respect and as well as learn from. No doubt their system is sustainable.

In my university there was 200 seats open for Medical School. 30,000 people applied for it. Just to give you an idea how competitive it is to get I university seats.

Here University degrees are free for citizens and is provided by the government and to get them you have to go through living hell. 100% in high school is just the start, SAT exam and the Knowledge Accumilation exam are the two next hurdles. After that there is the major speciality exam. And then you start praying day and night that you did good enough for them just to look at your paper.

Trust me, nothing in the whole world is more competitive than here.

I was just giving universities as an example.

Anyway, best of luck for KSA.

Now imagine all the students are the countries, and your have 5 top slots, meaning KSA has to defeat all the 200 countries to be in the top 5. It is not an easy task if not impossible.

What about the Saudi system regarding twelfth grade (Al-Twjehi)? Are not they going to amend it?

Good step...use the money from oil in other sector while you have. Lamborghinis won't provide jobs. Private universities by Sheikhs can turn around entire education system.

.
There is something called 'Curse of Oil'. It seems that it is true. No economy that is heavily dependent on oil is a knowledge economy, because they don't need to be one.

Building knowledge economies is a continuous process, and depends heavily on past knowledge base. Big bang investments in education may not yield the desired results.

Competition is the key to Knowledge economies, and that is where Saudi Arabia is lacking.

Well you can also say
Congrats
