Sania Mirza-Bruno Soares win US Open mixed doubles title
NEW YORK: A beaming Sania Mirza squealed and jumped into the arms of her partner, Brazil's Bruno Soares, as the top seeds sealed a 6-1, 2-6, 11-9 win over American Abigail Spears and Mexico's Santiago Gonzalez in exactly an hour in the mixed doubles final of the US Open. While Soares thanked all the Indian and Brazilian supporters, the Hyderabadi said she had a lot of fun competing this fortnight and was "delighted to win".

The top-seeds blasted off the blocks, but were pegged back in the second set, with the duo dropping the second when Gonzalez put away a difficult backhand volley on the deciding point of the eighth game.

In the super tie break, Sania and Soares jumped to a 3-1 and then 5-2 lead. Though the Mexican helped his team to pull back to 4-5, the top-seeds pulled their weight to push ahead to 8-4, aided by a Spears' double fault.

Sania and Soares then squandered five championship points, allowing their opponents to level at 9-9, before closing out, giving the Indian her third Grand Slam mixed doubles titles and her first at Flushing Meadows.

Friday's was Sania's sixth Grand Slam final, her fifth mixed doubles final. The Hyderabadi has won two mixed-doubles titles, at the Australian Open (2009) with Mahesh Bhupathi and French Open in 2012 (also with Bhupathi). Sania also made the title round of the Australian Open in January this year with Horia Tecau.

On Thursday, Swiss ace Martina Hingis and Italian Flavia Pennetta outplayed third seeds Sania and Cara Black 6-2, 6-4 in the women's doubles semifinals. The unseeded combine, who rode on a mix of reputation and range, came through in 70 minutes late. Hingis and Pennetta play Russians Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina in the title round on Saturday.

Hingis, in her second innings as a pro, was the difference between the two sides.

. . . . . . . . .
Is she still clinging on to her Indian citizenship? Must be so degrading for the husband.
What's so degrading about it? Is it degrading for Sania that her husband still has Pakistani citizenship?

On topic, I wonder why Sania always does well in doubles, but poorly in singles.

LOL! It surely is.....What's the issue with her accepting Pakistani citizenship? She can still play tennis,it's not like Tennis is banned in Pakistan or they don't have courts.

The wife thinks that her Husbands country is not liveable enough or to be associated with

Specially for a guy who represented his country in an International arena.Feel sorry for the dude and his family.

I stated a fact but wussies can't understand it,hence the feminist rumblings

Just go and watch ramleela....keep her away from chest thumping.
It's not Diwali season yet!

Sir,

If you want to stay stupid---please go to some other forum.
Even you know it wasn't a stupid question but based on the ground realities.I can understand it's difficult for South Indians to understand it but you are well aware of the social fabric in that place and how things work.

Doesn't everything you said apply in the other direction as well? The husband thinks the wife's country is not liveable enough, the wife has represented her country in an international arena, etc?

Maybe I'm a wussie hence I cannot understand it, as you say; in that case, would you be so kind enough as to explain it to me?

. .
Stop this stupid and amateur behavior on citizenship issue.
Who cares if her husband is from pakistan,,,she plays for india.

Marriage is a personal decision and i would be more than willing to marry a pakistani or afgani or anyone without thinking of nationality provided girl is hot:devil:

Yup it does but both are bound by a culture in which the bride takes her last name name and moves into his house.
