The Samsung Techwin MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle) armored personnel carrier was developed as a private venture for domestic and export markets. The first prototype was completed in 2006. Samsung was competing with Doosan Infracore Black Fox and Rotem KW1 Scorpion for a potential South Korean Army contract. At that time the South Korean Army planned to acquire a number of wheeled armored vehicles for rapid deployment and internal security roles to replace ageing K200 series tracked armored personnel carriers. Eventually Rotem company was selected as a winner to produce vehicles for the South Korean Army. In 2016 the Rotem KW1 (6x6) and KW2 (8x8) armored vehicles were adopted by the South Korean Army as K806 andK808 respectively. Eventually the Samsung Techwin MPV received no production orders from the South Korea, nor from export customers.
This armored personnel carrier has a payload capacity of 4 - 4.5 t. It carried a crew of two and 10 troops. Troops enter and leave the vehicle through the rear doors or roof hatches.
Armor of the baseline Samsung Technin MPV provides all-round protection against 7.62 mm armor-piercing rounds and artillery shell splinters. Front arc protects from 12.7 mm armor-piercing rounds. Add-on armor can be fitted for a higher level of protection. Vehicle is fitted with NBC protection system.
The Samsung Techwin MPV is fitted with a remotely controlled weapon station. Its primary armament is a 40 mm automatic grenade launcher. Alternatively it can be armed with a 12.7 mm machine gun. Secondary armament consists of 7.62 mm machine gun. Though armament can be tailored depending on customer requirements. This armored personnel carrier can be fitted with other weapons and variable weapon systems, including a one-man turret.
This APC is powered by a Cummins ISL 400 turbocharged diesel engine, developing 400 hp. It is mated to an automatic transmission. Vehicle has a full time 6x6 configuration. On hard surface roads it can be switched to 6x4 or 6x2 in order to save fuel and extend operational range of the vehicle. Automatic drivetrain management is optional. Vehicle has a central tyre inflation system and is fitted with run-flat tyres. This armored personnel carrier is fully amphibious. On water it is propelled by two waterjets. The MPV is air transportable by the C-130 Hercules transport aircraft.
There was also a version of Samsung Techwin MPV with a 8x8 configuration. It was developed alongside the 6x6 version to meet the South Korean Army requirement for a family of wheeled vehicles. Both versions share common chassis, powerpack, driveline and suspension components.
