From the size of their territory and the character of VN's act, snake is the best description of their national image. They can't beat you down, but they hide in a corner, seeking any opportunity to bite you, of course, with poison.

A snake in the grass always bites an unsuspecting fool. Thanks for offering that distinction. Seeing as how we (the US) and you (China) have a different meaning for "Snake" it's an important distinction to make.

And I wouldn't call Vietnam a snake from our perspective, they've been a good friend to US interests and businesses. They've yet to stab us.

Perhaps the Water Buffalo for Vietnam? They are a hardworking, if not somewhat in remarkable animal, similar to the Vietnamese people.
