Opening batsman Salman Butt has been named captain for the remaining Tests in England following Shahid Afridi's surprising decision to retire from Tests after the Headingley Test against Australia. Afridi will not play in Leeds because of a side strain.

"I worked out in the gym in the morning and I don't feel comfortable at all and I will not play the next Test," Afridi told Cricinfo.

Why not say the truth? He is running away from the responsibility. Typical Afridi.

Salman Butt named captain for rest of England tour

Opening batsman Salman Butt has been named Pakistan's captain for the remaining Tests in England following Shahid Afridi's surprising decision to retire from Tests after the defeat against Australia at Lord's. Afridi will not play the second Test against Australia at Headingley because of a side strain.

"I worked out in the gym in the morning and I don't feel comfortable at all and I will not play the next Test," Afridi told Cricinfo.

The PCB said in a statement that Kamran Akmal would be Butt's vice-captain for the Tests in England and that the matter concerning the inclusion of Younis Khan and Mohammad Yousuf in the team was also discussed at a meeting but was deferred.

Ijaz Butt, the PCB chairman, convened a meeting on Saturday involving the team management and senior players to discuss the way forward following Afridi's decision to retire from Tests. The meeting was attended by the team manager Yawar Saeed, coach Waqar Younis, associate manager Shafqat Rana, Salman Butt, Shoaib Malik, Kamran Akmal and Umar Gul.

Afridi caught everyone, including the PCB, off-guard by announcing his retirement from Test cricket immediately after his first Test as captain - and first Test in four years - which Pakistan lost by 150 runs. He cited a side strain and temperamental incompatibility to the demands of the five-day game as factors behind the decision.

He is our most successful batsmen against Australia, scored a 50 and almost a 100 in second innings. Why would you call him a parchi? He deserves to be in the team based on his performance!

Salman Butt named captain for rest of England tour

As was widely expected Salman Butt has been appointed Pakistan's Test captain for the rest of the summer in England, including the second Test against Australia in Headingley. Butt becomes the fifth man to lead the Test side since January 2009 and the 28th man to lead Pakistan, taking over from Shahid Afridi who announced a sudden retirement from Test cricket on Friday. Wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal will be his deputy.

The decision came early on Saturday after a meeting between the PCB chairman Ijaz Butt, the team management and a group of senior players including Shoaib Malik, Akmal, Umar Gul and Butt. "We have appointed Salman as the captain for the rest of the Tests and we are confident that he will be able to do a good job with it," Ijaz Butt told Cricinfo. "Everybody who was involved in the decision gave their approval."

At the time of Afridi's appointment, in May this year, Butt's name had come up in discussions though, as the administration was keen to unify the leadership of all formats under one man, they plumped for Afridi. Butt was appointed his deputy and though it seemed that he would take over yesterday, the PCB chairman had said that it wasn't an "automatic" decision.

However, steadily over the last six months, Butt has become one of Pakistan's most reliable batsmen across all formats; he's averaging over 40 in his last seven Tests with one hundred and four fifties and reinvented his entire game to shine at the World T20 in the Caribbean, a format in which he had previously struggled. In the Lord's Test, he was comfortably Pakistan's best batsman, top-scoring in each innings with 63 and 92.

There had been talk in the aftermath of the Lord's defeat that one of Mohammad Yousuf or Younis Khan - or both - might be called up to bolster an inexperienced middle order but for now the situation remains unchanged and unresolved. Yousuf is officially retired from international cricket and Younis and the PCB chairman are at odds despite the former's indefinite ban having been lifted.

"We did discuss both Yousuf and Younis in the meeting but we decided to defer the matter," Butt said, acknowledging also that the option to call them up at some point during the summer remains open. "I think we should appreciate that both the youngsters Azhar Ali and Umar Amin did very well given it was their debuts and my own feeling is that they should be persisted with," he added.

One person who will not be playing in the second Test is Afridi. Though he cited his temperamental unsuitability to the format, Afridi was also suffering from a side strain he picked up during the Asia Cup. "I worked out in the gym in the morning and I don't feel comfortable at all still. I will not be playing next week," Afridi told Cricinfo.

Giving resignation in the middle of a series is not a wise decision. Didn't he know this before that he can't play test match? I can't applaud him for that.

he didn't wanted to play test matches...PCB pressurized him to play test match and lead the team... he accepted that.. but now he felt that he cant play test matches... he dont have temperament to play 5 day cricket and he admitted that and gave resignation.... thats it... mana k us ki thori buhat ghalti thi lekin ab jo ho chuka so ho chuka... now please leave this topic.... Butt becomes the fifth man to lead the Test side since January 2009 :woot:

5 captains in 1 year.... :hitwall: so how can we win test matches with this consistency ?? :frown:

.
Afridi should take on the captaincy challenge. Force himself to develop a defensive batting technique and bowl his fast leg breaks to contain. By running away from the leadership challenge Afridi would destabilise the team and do injustice to his enormous God given talent. The responsibility of captaincy improved my batting. From mid 20s, my batting average went up to 50. To lead by example I had to develop defense -- Imran Khan

.
Running away from captaincy middle of the series........ Childish behavior.:bunny::bunny:

Well could be replaced saying injury and can't play rest of the series. And he could resign from test after that.

.
Congrats to Salman Butt but again pcb is making mistake he is the only batsman the pakistan team who llok like getiing runs for pakistan and giving him extra burden of the team it will make more pressure to him and what ever he is making runs it will be difficult to make in extra burden better of pcb has sent younis khan as charge for the England tour and once again they are making too many captains

.
10 captains in team 1 performer no wonder we are all out 148 in test match .... no one wants to work hard , every one is giving direction and RUNNING around like chickens

Afridi looks to be injured ...

Where are all the players who are on central contract ??

Free ka kha rehe hain ...

.
I am glad Afridi is not playing. Good step by him. It should give us a spot to check one more batsmen..Yasir Hameed?
