Safeguard our nationals: China to Libya
Expressing serious concern over the unrest in Libya, China today appealed to the government to safeguard the life and property of Chinese nationals there.
"China hopes the country can restore social stability and political order as soon as possible," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu told a media briefing here today answering questions over reports of attacks on Chinese companies in Libya.
Ma said Chinese firms have been attacked and some Chinese nationals injured in various incidents of vandalism, looting and arson, Ma said.
State run Global Times daily quoted Du Minghao, a spokesman for the Chinese embassy in Tripoli, as saying that rioters looted the construction site of a Chinese-supported project in the eastern part of the country on Friday.
Official news agency Xinhua said Huafeng Construction Co. Ltd from China''s Zhejiang Province was looted by a group of armed gangsters Sunday afternoon in the eastern Libyan city of Agedabia, and nearly 1,000 Chinese workers were rendered homeless as they were forced out of their on site living quarters.
Du said around 30,000 Chinese worked in Libya primarily in the fields of railway construction, telecommunications and oilfield services.
"The situation in eastern Libya is the most severe, and that the central area is starting to worsen. Internet access, mobile phones and landlines are periodically cut off.
Air and road transport are also affected," Du said.
A South Korean-run construction site in Tripoli was also robbed Sunday, leaving three Korean workers slightly injured and two Bangladeshis seriously wounded, the daily reported.
Declining to answer questions whether China plans to pull out its workers and join the international community in condemning Libyan government for firing against the anti-government protestors, Ma said said "Chinese government attaches great importance to the situation and has instructed the Chinese Embassy in Libya to take every necessary measure to ensure the safety of the Chinese nationals and organizations in Libya."
The spokesman said the Foreign Ministry had launched the emergency mechanism and lodged emergency representations with the Libyan side demanding an immediate probe into the attacks and punishment against the perpetrators.
On Monday, China''s Ministry of Commerce urged Chinese businesses in Libya to pay increased attention to their security and suggested Chinese businessmen planning to visit Libya postpone their plans for the time being.
