SAARC Satellite to be a Communication-cum-Meteorology Satellite - To be launched in 2016

As per SUPARCO, they will launch satellite from their soil in 2040,that's 25 years from now ! By that time humans already settled in Mars.

Even Indians will manage for Human Spaceflight towards Mars.

Good initiative by India, but then again which type of satelitte are we talking about here? Is it communication satellite or ? Since India doesn't have a reliable/operational heavy rocket which can launch communication satellites, so I guess this SARCC satelitte wont be a comm satelitte or of it is,will it be launch by Ariane 5 which is where India has been launching all its commercial SATs so far. Even if that was the case its still a food project/initiative by India for regional development and coopeeatiin. Hopefully other countries will learn to cooperate together /join this project, even of its launched from French Guiana by ESA, building the satellite is what matters most.

Bro forget about Pakistan and BD, they have their own issues with national pride and anti-India sentiment (you can see that here) if they want to cut off their nose to spite their face so be it. For the other SAARC nations like Afghanistan, Nepal, Bhutan and Sri Lanka this will gesture will be very warmly received and a great boost for them.

Nopes,this is probably a communication satellite.We would only know of the launcher when specification of satellite comes out.Gslv mk2 can launch a satellite weighing <= 2200kg,I believe higher payloads are possible.

GSLV - ISRO

SAARC satellite will be a multipurpose geo-stationary satellite that is a communication-cum-meteorology satellite based on the lines of the Indian National Satellite System or INSAT series of satellites.

SAARC satellite will provide transponders in various bands (C, S, Extended C and Ku) to serve the television and communication needs of SAARC. The satellite will also have the Very High Resolution Radiometer (VHRR), CCD cameras for meteorological imaging. The satellites also incorporate transponder(s) for receiving distress alert signals for search and rescue missions in the South Asian and Indian Ocean Region, as ISRO is a member of the COSPAS-SARSAT programme.

It will most probably be launched by the GSLV Mark II satellite launch vehicle which has a maximum capacity of 2,500 kg or 2.5 tonnes of payload in the geostationary transfer orbit (GTO) wherein the SAARC satellite is to be placed.

Cost per kg of payload in GTO for Ariane 5 launch vehicle = $ 25,700+
Cost per kg of payload in GTO for GSLV Mark II launch vehicle = $ 14,400

ISRO chairman K. Radhakrishnan has told IANS that the country pays around $85-90 million or around Rs.500 crore as launch fee for sending up a 3.5-tonne communication satellite. The cost of satellite is separate.

He said the cost of GSLV is Rs.220 crore or $36 million.

And yes - not all Indian communication satellites are launched from foreign soil - communication satellites weighing up to 2.5 tonnes can be launched from India itself - those weighing more than 2.5 tonne are launched from Ariane Space's Ariane 5 launch vehicle. The more powerful GSLV Mark III launch vehicle is to be fully operational by 2017-18 which can launch communication satellites weighing up to 5 tonnes in the GTO making India independent of Ariane Space. Till date GSLV has launched some 4 and even PSLV has launched 1 communication satellite in the GTO.

2040 is too far yaar, I heard Pakistan is launching a satellite in 2018 I think. There was a news few days back.
