LINKÖPING Gripen aircraft can be flown on biofuel. Saab has conducted tests in Linköping. Saab says that it is the first time that a single-engine fighter aircraft have flown with pure biofuel in the tank. Several test flights have been conducted in Linköping.
- This is an important step to insure the future Gripen, says Göran Bengtsson, research manager at Saab Aeronautics in a statement. The fuel, called CHCJ-5, which has been used in the tests is made from rapeseed oil.
The tests, which is supported by the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration and GKN Aerospace, will show two things: First, that there is an alternative to existing fuels that must be imported and partly to combat aircraft can fly green. According to GKN Aerospace's biofuel is completely interchangeable with regular jet fuel, and no changes to the engine have thus been required.
- The test flight shows clearly that even military aviation can contribute to reducing climate impact by using biofuels, says Stefan Oscarsson, responsible for the military operations of GKN in a statement.
