S. Korea To Buy Apache Guardian Helicopters

SEOUL — South Korea on Wednesday said it had agreed to buy a fleet of U.S. Apache attack helicopters in a deal with reported to be worth $1.5 billion. It comes at a time of heightened tensions with the North.

The Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) said it would acquire 36 of the AH-64E Apache Guardian choppers from Boeing over a three-year period from 2016. The DAPA said the chopper has the ability to destroy tanks and armored vehicles, adding that it would strengthen the South’s defenses against provocation from the North.

The decision comes as the Korean peninsula remains in a state of heightened military tension, with the North threatening “thermo-nuclear war,” angered by fresh U.N. sanctions and joint South Korea-U.S. military exercises.

The agency declined to give prices and said only that the deal includes the transfer of technology, but Yonhap news agency said the project would cost a total of 1.8 trillion won ($1.5 billion).

South Korea will be the fourth country to buy the four-blade, twin-engine helicopter after the United States, Taiwan and Saudi Arabia, Yonhap said. The chopper will replace a fleet of AH-1 Cobra helicopters that have been in service for decades in South Korea, DAPA officials said.

those were Ah-64D(I don't know what Korea is buying),which costs $ 52 million - $ 61 million U.S in 2013...and with those helos, will also include the supply of 812 AGM-114L-3 Hellfire Longbow missiles, 542 AGM-114R-3 Hellfire-II missiles, 245 Stinger Block I-92H missiles and 12 AN/APG-78 fire-control radars.

that might answer your question..

also,SK might get this helos cheap as they are allies of US.

Korea buys Boeing AH-64E Apache, The winner - Boeing AH-64E Apache Guardian - is an upgraded version of the AH-64D Apache Longbow, better than AH-64D, 44million$/one

‘Tank killer’ helicopter joins fleet-INSIDE Korea JoongAng Daily
The South Korean military selected the Boeing AH-64E Apache Guardian as its attack helicopter yesterday.

Nicknamed the “tank killer,” the Apache Guardian is evaluated as the deadliest helicopter in the world.

“If a large-scale attack helicopter is dispatched, it can assist the aging attack helicopters in operation,” a South Korean Ministry of National Defense official said. “It can also promptly respond to any surgical strike by the North Korean army or its armored brigade.”

“In this large-scale attack helicopter procurement project, three candidates ran in the bidding competition - the Bell AH-1Z Viper, the Boeing AH-64E Apache and the TAI T129,” Baek Yun-hyeong, spokesman for the state-controlled Defense Acquisition Program Administration, said.

“The committee for defense acquisition program [chaired by Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin], which is in charge of the final decision on procurement of military equipment, finally selected the Apache based on its capability and suitability for operation.”

The large-scale helicopter acquisition project cost 1.8 trillion won ($1.6 billion) of state funds to procure a total of 36 attack helicopters by 2018.

The winner - Boeing AH-64E Apache Guardian - is an upgraded version of the AH-64D Apache Longbow, which the U.S. military currently uses.

The 17-meter (55.7-foot) long, 5-meter tall helicopter can fly at a maximum speed of 365 kilometers per hour (227 miles per hour), carrying a load as heavy as 10.4 metric tons. Its operating altitude is 6,400 meters at maximum, rising 800 meters per minute.

“The Apache Guardian has an enhanced capability of engine power transmission, and a better radar system to detect a target,” an official from the South Korean procurement agency said on the condition of anonymity.

“The U.S. military is also in the process of upgrading its 690 Apache Longbow choppers to the level of the Apache Guardian or procuring new ones.”

Basically, the Apache Guardian is loaded with 16 Hellfire guided missiles, 76 70-millimeter caliber rockets, and 1,200 30-millimeter machine guns. The missiles are capable of striking a total of 16 different targets located 8 kilometers away within 27 seconds.

Particularly, its radar system, called the Longbow Radar, is able to detect 256 targets at maximum within its radius of 50 kilometers simultaneously, after analyzing whether the targets are friend or foe and what kind of weapons they are - tank, artillery or military-owned vehicle. It can work around the clock, regardless of the weather.

The contract regarding the Apache Guardian includes technology transfer regarding military helicopters from the U.S. to the South.
