Sources close to idrw.org have confirmed that DRDO plans to carry out first flight of Rustom-II HALE UAV in June and Taxi trails of the UAV are progressing as per schedule and first flight of the UAV will likely happen by June this year and will enter into prodcution by 2017 .

idrw.org was also able to confirm that DRDO has built Two working Prototypes of the Rustom-II UAV and both are carrying out ground test along withTaxi trials and are both are powered by Austrian company made wing-mounted turboprop Rotax engines , Interestingly Isreali made Heron UAV of which India is largest operator has engines from the same Company , but we were not able to confirm if engine variant are the same.

Rustom-II will take its first flight with lighter payload and after few successfully test flights will be carrying its intended payloads since integration and development of UAV sensors payload is still been carried out , Rustom-1 MALE UAV will likely enter production by end of 2015 and Indian army might become the largest operator of Rustom-1 which in its current stage seems more interested in Rustom-1 then Indian air force .

Good news Indeed.

What is much use for these, we don't need them in many numbers instead why not finish aura quickly.
Some of the technologies that are devloped for Rustom will be used in Aura also thats why we are devloping Rustom first and then Aura. The Aura project will not get delayed by this approach like all other typical DRDO projects.

Why not just develop technologies only, what we need to for Aura. Fly that Aura sooner with limited capabilities and keep upgrading it as we go with our technologies development.

Because we need to devlop some products which army will use in some years and not keep devloping products which army needs after 10 years. If we chose the second path then the army will need to import not only products which it needs currently but in the future also as the futuristic projects will get delayed so i think that it is the best path in which DRDO is currently walking.

Disagree :D
If we gonna send these across the borders then am all for it. Other wise .....

We are also developing an indigenous engine with more power for Rustom-II production variant.

Dude see the pic of rustom-2
It uses a turboprop:p

2017!? Are we that backward in drones?
Relax.
We are backward in anything that involves tech, deal with it.

Plus even the 2017 rustom 2 will have mostly western ecm and cameras and not to mention the turboprops are also not indian.

HAL is simply fooling us by importing stuff and assembling it here.it serves no purpose if we cannot make any critical component of a drone.
