What is a deckhouse and what composite is it?

Apparently that "composite" is not good enought since 3rd Zumwalt ship will have deckhouse from steel instead of "composite".

What is a deckhouse and what composite is it?
Also where is the rust on the ship?

It looks like there are rust spots on a deckhouse.
It's a sea vessel, it will get rusty, whats abnormal here?

I haven't seen rust on hull of Alexandrid class minesweeper. Have you seen?

The composite may not be good enough for different reasons but that deckhouse isnt rusting. The rust may be from the deck of the ship itself and pretty much all ships encounter it especially those that operate near corrosive ports. She is based out of San Diego where other ship rust quite a bit as well. In total the US Navy spends $6 billion a year on it.

Until Putin pushed for reforms in late 2016-17 most of the Russian Navy was rusting away as well with parts of Udaloy and Sovremenny ships literally falling off due to rust. Nothing to do with quality but the nature of the Barents sea in terms of corrosion and salt. Humans are to blame for dumping corrosive material in these ports which cause these issues.

Pakistan Navy is in serious trouble because of it and wanting to move its major assets out of Karachi as rust had nearly put one Agosta 90B out of commission and Karachi port is one of the most toxic in the world.

By contrast, the Zumwalt is actually doing pretty good in terms of corrosion.

All the forward deployments over the last 30 years have really taken their told on the USN, on top of the deferred maintainer and the exhausted crews. I’m expected a huge bump in funding for the navy in the next few years. I’ve been seen a lot more advertisements on the NYC subway for the navy, so IMHO, in 5-10 years the USN will be ready like it was after the Reagan buildup. Also, expect lots of contractors to get lots of new maintenance contracts soon in a lot of ports in the Pacific. Lots of west coast shipyards are about to come back. California, Oregon, and Washington may see positive economic and social developments from this work.

USS ‘Zumwalt’, a futuristic guided missile destroyer with superior stealth capabilities that cost American taxpayers some $4 billion, is rusting, new photos have revealed.
State-of-the-art stealth tech provides ‘Zumwalt’ with a radar cross-section similar to a fishing boat despite the ship’s length of 190 meters. But even this couldn’t conceal a rust problem with the vessel, which was commissioned in 2016 and has yet to be put in service.
Photos uploaded on social media earlier this week showed some of the destroyer’s radar-absorbent tiles changing color to dark orange and rust covering the vessel’s convex tumblehome hull.

The US Navy said it’s waging “a constant battle against corrosion” when asked to comment on the appearance of its destroyer by the Drive website.

“The harsh environment in which we operate degrades our ships, and our sailors work hard to address corrosion along with all the maintenance and crew training required to sustain our navy’s warfighting readiness,” it pointed out.

‘Zumwalt’ is currently undergoing testing and training off southern California, with its homeport being San Diego Bay.

The composite materials used in the ship are supposed to reduce corrosion. However, according to the Drive, its stealth coating could be harder to maintain than the normal surfaces of other ships in the US Navy.

Another factor likely aggravating the rust issue is the minimal manning concept employed on ‘Zumwalt’.
Automation allows it to function with a crew of only 175 people, so there simply might not be enough hands on board to scrub the corrosion off.
The photos caused a debate online, with some commentators claiming that the condition of the ship was an “embarrassment,” while others responded that only battle capabilities mattered and some rust didn’t affect them at all.
USS ‘Zumwalt’ is the first of three DDG-1000 destroyers designed to support ground forces in land attacks, while also performing anti-air, anti-surface and anti-submarine missions.
The second ship in the class, USS ‘Michael Mansoor’, was commissioned in 2019 and is also undergoing testing in San Diego.

The Russians are really reaching it.

. . .
Russia rust: Russia bad and old
China rust: China bad and cheap
American rust: wow so much intense training impressive always combat ready *rams into containership/mountain/port/sandbank*

Even stainless steel can corrode.

Do fiberglass rust ?

I see brown spots on the DDG-1000 deckhouse. Are you saying it is not rust ?

I would expect more from a ship that costed 4 billion US dollars.
