That's why Russians are happy to keep China as a good customer for their engines, fighters, helicopters, while they only offer India co-developments on a partner level. So which country really went beyond the customer level?

How can buying be better then co-development? You can think of it from JF-17 perspective. Do you think Pakistan would have been better off buying the aircrafts? That is just an example but that is also different than the partnership between India and Russia because India is investing heavily and is much more involved in projects and with co-development India is going to acquire technologies which otherwise will take long time for it to develop, if it decides to go alone.

Is it? Where does the design for their J20 come from? Why do they need Russian RD93, AL31 and now even wants 117S and other engines?... Only because they copy many Russian designs and developments, without paying for them, doesn't make it somehow Chinese. China is still dependend on Russia, for many things, when we take Russian reports to account even for fighter radar techs. But if they can't get it on other ways, they have to pay for it like any normal customer as well, India on the other side is reducing the dependence, by joining partnerships! That gives India much more involvement about the requirements, costs and even after sale support, while China remains dependent on what Russia is ready to provide.

Think local manufacture, reverse engineering..etc.

Yes it is, but products like the J-10 also show that the level of dependance is reducing .. not rapidly.. but it is.
The issue of dependance on engines has more to do with metallurgy than design.

The Indians are happy with the path they chose, and we are happy with ours.

Time will tell which path gives better results for our respective indigenous defence industries.
