LAHORE - The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is facing embarrassment and difficulties in its operations side after authorities at the Moscow airport have refused to release a PIA aircraft that made an emergency landing after developing a technical fault about two weeks back. Much to the surprise of the flight crew and PIA high-ups in Moscow, officials there refused to handover the plane after they found that the national flag carrier had to clear some debt from the past for using the airport services and facilities. Per details, a London-bound PIA aircraft (PK 785) with at least 128 passengers on board had to make an emergency landing at Moscow airport after one of its engines ceased to function. Sources in the PIA said another aircraft flying to Manchester with over 200 passengers on board had been diverted to the Russian capital to take the passengers stranded there to Manchester for their further transportation to London. PIA officials are still engaged with aviation authorities in Moscow to secure the release of the plane, but the Russians want the PIA to clear the outstanding dues that date way back to the times when PIA used to operate its flights to Moscow. These operations were suspended in early 2000 after operational difficulties of the national flag carrier. Sources said that it would take another two to three weeks before a breakthrough was expected, probably after the Russians made the PIA pay the dues. Sources said the episode in Moscow would add to the woes of PIA, already short of planes on national and international routes. - See more at: Russians refuse to let PIA off the hook without payment | Pakistan Today | Latest news | Breaking news | Pakistan News | World news | Business | Sport and Multimedia

128 passengers on a B-777 in summer season for London? That is an abysmally low pax load...

Anyways on to the topic at hand, the Russians wouldn't let this opportunity go. I also heard somewhere that the plane hasn't been fixed yet either...

good job russia, make these incompetent pieces of crap pay for their debts, maybe only humiliation from the world could save our government owned companies.

So the payment is overdue since 2000, when uncle mushy was in power and Pakistan's economy was sky high, and national treasury was overflowing with billions of dollars as per his fan boys. What a shame, uncle mushy didn't pay a few hundred thousand dollars to clear the PIA dues.

On topic, Pakistani corruption is now reaching international levels.

Pakistan simply avoided paying dues to another country(Russia) over a decade??? :what: couldn't Russia exert the dues with more legal manner than this???

Pakistan International Airlines Boeing 777, which is stranded at Moscow airport since July 21, needs engine replacement and should return to Karachi sometime next week, Mashhood Tajwar, General Manager, Public Relations, PIA told Business Recorder here on Friday. He said that a team of PIA engineers which was flown out to Moscow for initial investigations has reported that one of the engines needs to be replaced.

Since Boeing 777 has General Electric (G.E.) engines, most probably the required engine would be flown out by G.E. London, which is the overhaul base of PIA. Tajwar said the PIA team sent to inspect the aircraft has returned and another team of engineers would be flown out to Moscow as soon as visas are granted to them to replace the engine. The Heathrow, London bound flight PK 785 with 128 passengers on board had left Islamabad on July 21 at 10 am.

After covering some distance the aircraft developed trouble and as soon as its Captain noticed warning signals on the panel, he gave May Day call to the tower which asked the Captain to divert the aircraft to the nearest airfield. Since the aircraft was in the Russian territory, the flight was diverted and landed safely at Moscow which was the nearest airport.

On the same day, PK 701 which had taken off from Islamabad for Manchester at 3 pm and was in the vicinity of Kabul was contacted by the tower and advised to divert the aircraft to Moscow to pick up the stranded passengers of PK-785. They were flown to Manchester from where they were taken to London by road.

I think Indian should help for the PIA to get the plane back as a goodwill gesture.

Thanks but we are working on it.
The replacement engine was to be flown to Moscow from engine manufacturer i.e. General Electric facility in London.

A PIA Engineering team was also due to arrive in Moscow to perform engine replacement work. At the time of this report publication, the engineering team was waiting to get Russian visas to visit Moscow.
