Russians, Israelis have 'occupied' Goa's coastal villages: Congress MP

PANAJI: Russians and Israelis have 'occupied' certain coastal villages in Goa and the trend needs to be resisted, Congress Rajya Sabha member Shantaram Naik said Tuesday.

"Russians and Israelis have occupied certain villages in a manner which cannot be called ideal tourism, and they indulge in business activities in violation of the laws of the land, including Foreign ExchangeManagement Act," said Naik in a written statement which was issued quoting the parliamentarian's speech at a National Students Union of India ( NSUI) convention here Tuesday.

"Goa's precious lands needs to be protected and we cannot allow any Goan village to be called 'Israel Village' or 'Russian Village'," Naik said.

Naik's reference was to the beach villages of Morjim, Ashwem and Arambol in North Goa, which are popular with Israeli and Russian tourists, who flock to these beaches in thousands annually, making the area a throbbing hub for foreigners.

While foreigners entering into hospitality and catering businesses in partnership with local residents is not a rare phenomenon, the Morjim-Ashwem and Arambol beach stretches were also in the cross-hairs of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) a few years back, which had red-flagged a couple of real estate deals along the coastline, allegedly funded by frontmen for the Russian mafia.

While over 40,000 Russian tourists hit Goa's beaches in the tourist season from October to March, the beach tourism destination also saw some 4,000 Israelis hitting the surf here annually.

There are indian communities in many foreign cities, i don't see why a few israelis and russians can't "occupy" the villages, especially when locals have no problem. But of course, the drug trade and russian mafia need to be countered.

As Sarthak above said, whats wrong with people from overseas coming over and establishing small communities here. We do it all over all the time.

And as for the drugs problem, I am all for correcting the situation but I do not want these people to be made scapegoats. We have a much major issue of afeem, ganja etc which are domestically grown in various homes in Punjab, UP, Bihar, Haryana, and for local/personal consumption. And most of these people do not even realize they are breaking the law by doing so. If correction needs to be done, then enforcement should be for everybody not just some foreign tourists coming over to relax and unwind, which has forever been Goan culture.

Actually there is some truth to the post. Israel has a huge sex trafficking problem. It actually was aired on the Discovey channel which actually exposed the problem. The Israeli mafia has been linked to it along with the RUssian Mob. What is sad is that in their countries, Indian's cannpt imagine doing this. Indians really need to wake up. Nothing wong with folks coming and settling. But ask yourself, how can they so quickly buy up prime property? Another issue which I have mnetioned numerous times before, no foreigner should ever be allowed to buy any property near the coastal waters or any land borders. Just think from a security prespective. Ah, but what should I expect when our generals are corrupt, how can I expect India to function properly, e.g. Advarsh.

My only issue is when Indians cannot even enter such places. We have every right to enter any business. There should NEVER BE ANY BARRIER TO ENTERING JEWISH ESTABLISHMENTS OTHERWISE I WILL PERSONALLY START A RIOT AND KICK SOME ***. NO BLODDY FOREIGNER IS GOING TO FUK UP MY INDIA OR MY PPL. THATS THE MENTALITY YOU GUYS NEED. Growing up in NYC, ain;t easy. At least in India, make sure you control the land, the rules, the regulations,etc.

Listen, with the magnitutde of corruption going on over there, its very easy to sway votes in a particular way if you have the resources. There are some Jewish restauants and hostels in Goa, Mumbai, HP that are/were barring Indians from entering. It was reported in the news. Thats is not right and should never, ever be permitted. Yes, they do, but they are not establishing business all the time. I guess you forgot to read the part where they mentioned the nexus with Russian/Israeli mafia. Also, they happen to be the biggest suppliers of synthetic drugs. If you read my previous post, I mentioned the national security aspect. Foreigners should not be allowed to purchase such property. Its bad business for India. Anything by the border and coastal waters thought hugely in demand is a real headache for our security especially with India not having the enough resources. Born out here. yes, india has a sex trafficking problem as well. What makes it worse it that these traffickers and countless others, take these young innocent girls to foriegn lands where they are enslaved as sex slaves. There are reports of Indian girls being trafficked as sex slaves to the Middle east, Africa, and Southeast Asia. Its not right and should be nipped ASAP. Just because its an issue in India also, doesn;t make none of this crap right.
