Russian Su-27 fighter jet entered Finnish airspace without permission or radio response flying over Finland.

A possible violation of Finnish airspace by a Russian SU-27 fighter has been detected in the Gulf of Finland south of Porvoo on Thursday October 6th at about 16.43 pm.

The suspected violation of Finnish airspace continued approximately one minute, and sided Finnish airspace for about 13 kilometers at a maximum of about one kilometer depth.

The Air Force conducted an identification flight.

The Finnish Border Guard will investigate the matter.

The Russian Defense Ministry denies the violation of the airspace of Finland.

Pathetic english, how can an air space violation be an invasion ?

They are getting too big for their boots, if Russia violates Finnish airspace again, shoot down the plane. They have Hornets FFS, shouldn't be that hard.

Ever hear of 'an invasive procedure' in medicine? It simply means 'going into' a body.

From Cambridge English DIctionary:

invade (verb)

B2 [ I or T ] to enter a country by force with large numbers of soldiers in order to take possession of it: Concentrations of troops near the border look set to invade within the next few days.
C1 [ I or T ] to enter a place in large numbers, usually when unwanted and in order to take possession or do damage: Hundreds of squatters have invaded waste land in the hope that they will be allowed to stay.
[ T ] to enter an area of activity in a forceful and noticeable way: Maria looks set to invade the music scene with her style and image.
C2 [ T ] to spoil a situation or quality for another person without thinking about their feelings: Famous people often find their privacy is invaded by the press.

That's not how it works. What if the 'tresspass' is accidental, e.g. due to some equipment malfunction or navigational error? Next thing you know you're are war.

This armed Russian Su-27 Flanker has (probably) violated the Finnish airspace today

The Finnish Ministry of Defense has released a photo of an armed Russian Flanker that possibly violated Finland’s sovereign airspace.
In the last few years we have reported several close encounters between Russian and NATO or allied aircraft in the Baltic region.

However, all these encounters occurred more or less in accordance with a standard “script”: the Russian aircraft, approaching or skirting some sovereign airspace, caused the fighter jets in QRA (Quick Reaction Alert) to scramble to perform a VID (Visual Identification) and take some cool shots like those we have published here in the past.

And, above all, the Russians almost always remained in international airspace.

Until today.

Here’s the official statement of the Finnish Ministry of Defense:

A possible violation of Finnish airspace by a Russian SU-27 fighter has been detected in the Gulf of Finland south of Porvoo on Thursday October 6th at about 16.43 pm.

The suspected violation of Finnish airspace continued approximately one minute, and sided Finnish airspace for about 13 kilometers at a maximum of about one kilometer depth.

The Air Force conducted an identification flight.

The Finnish Border Guard will investigate the matter.

The “possible violation” must have been determined by means of primary radar returns and probably occurred before the Su-27 was intercepted by the Finnish F/A-18 Hornets.

Although close encounters with “Ivan” are nothing special, a real airspace violation is something much more rare (and interesting.)

And Estonia too.
Estonia, Finland say Russia entered airspace before U.S. defense pact

By Tuomas Forsell and Jussi Rosendahl | HELSINKI

Estonia said a Russian jet violated its airspace on Friday, hours after neighboring Finland said two similar planes passed over its territory as it prepared to sign a defense pact with the United States.

Moscow denied sending planes across anyone's borders - but one analyst said the flights could have been staged as a reminder of Russia's influence, as countries in the region looked to strengthen ties with the West.

Estonia's defense ministry said a Russian fighter jet entered its airspace for less than a minute with its transponder turned off at 2.38 a.m. (7.38 p.m. ET, Thursday).

Helsinki said two different SU-27 planes crossed into its airspace on Thursday afternoon and evening, over the Gulf of Finland - the body of water that separates it from Estonia.

"We take these incidents seriously," Finland's defense minister, Jussi Niinisto, told reporters. "Having two suspected violations on the same day is exceptional."

Russia's defense ministry dismissed the reports, saying SU-27 military planes had conducted training flights on Thursday and Friday over neutral waters, Russian agencies reported.

Finland has grown increasingly worried about military activities by Russia - its former ruler with which it shares a 1,300-km (812-mile) land border - particularly since Moscow's annexation of Ukraine's Crimea region.

In response, Finland has tightened cooperation with Sweden and fostered closer ties with NATO. On Friday it signed a defense cooperation deal with the United States, covering training and information sharing but stopping short of military assistance.

"It's positive that United States is interested in Northern Europe's security situation and of collaboration with the region's countries. We see this as a stabilizing element," Niinisto said.

He declined to speculate on whether Russia had tried to show its power before his meeting with U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defence Robert Work.

But Charly Salonius-Pasternak, analyst at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs, said it was "entirely credible, that airspace violations were a reminder from Russia: 'Hey, we are still here'."

"It costs them nothing, and they can see that these violations have an effect on Finland," he told public broadcaster YLE.

In April, two Russian warplanes flew simulated attack passes near a U.S. guided missile destroyer in the Baltic Sea.

Those Russians are crazy...they are just going to push Finnish public opinion towards joining NATO. Severomorsk is only 100km away from the Finnish border. That's closer than Taiwan is to China.

Well in that case, Russia's Air Force is very poorly trained considering how many times they have "trespassed" into other country's airspaces. Also, I said warn them and if they do it again, only then should the plane be brought down. Not to mention Russia is in no position to fight a war with Finland. Finland has 55 F-18's, they can bulldoze nearby towns and attack severomorsk.

This is actually NOT the case. The Finland incident stands out exactly because is different from the more routinely occuring Russian flights NEAR boundaries (in ADIZ but still in international airspace)

Now show a picture of that man with a blown off jaw and the Finish signing an armistice.

people shouldn't get so woke up by this news. Yes Russia has been aggressive ,threatening and violating its eastern European/Scandinavian/Balkan states airspace frequently. However, i don't believe that is enough reason to shoot down their fighter jet even if it trespasses these countries airspace, they should merely be escorted out of that country's airspace or maybe forced to land and their aircraft stripped down into pieces like the Chinese once did with a U.S spy plane. lol . However, i still don't understand why Finland hasn't joined NATO yet. It should have been a non event for them to join long ago.

You know in other to keep peace you need to carry a very big stick, Finland needs NATO'S big stick to keep peace and stability with Russia. That way both sides will know the implications of any misadventures. Helps keep the peace.WIN-WIN for both sides.:)

Buddy are you drunk on something radioactive or did your mother drop u on ur head, sorry for the harsh words but nothing else came to mind when i saw your two previous posts, russia in no postion to fight a war with finland???, 55 f18's???, those f 18' will be dispatched to the underworld on probably the first or secong day of the war, a week or so max russia needs to kick finland to oblivion if they launch a major offensive, russia can and has been locking hirns with usa sonce forever, f 18's dont bother dumbo, what matters is professionalism, experience of the airforce, and by the way su 35's can toast f 18's any day at the office no problem, im sorry lol but i dont even know why im arguing with u, u are behaving like an indian fan boy...

The war ended when he regained his consciousness, he recovered fully and led a peaceful and happy life, passing away at the ripe old age of 96.
Yes, sure they had to give up territory, but they humiliated the Red army and gave it a beating that took them a while to recover from. With nearly four times as many losses in terms of men and materials, an armistice wasn't a defeat for a small nation that stood up against tyranny. The UK, Europe, and most of the world admire the Finns for their incredible valour. By God I hope they remain a free people and they join NATO.
