Police detained hundreds of protesters across Russia on Sunday, including opposition leader Alexei Navalny, after thousands took to the streets to demonstrate against corruption and demand the resignation of Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.

The protests, reckoned to be the biggest since a wave of anti-Kremlin demonstrations in 2011/2012, come a year before a presidential election which Vladimir Putin is expected to contest, running for what would be a fourth term.

Opinion polls suggest the liberal opposition, which Navalny represents, have little chance of fielding a candidate capable of unseating Putin, who enjoys high ratings. But Navalny and his supporters hope to channel public discontent over official corruption to attract more support.

A Reuters reporter saw police detain Navalny, who hopes to run against Putin, as he walked along central Moscow's Tverskaya Street with supporters, part of an unsanctioned rally as a police helicopter circled overhead.

Police put Navalny in a truck around which hundreds of protesters crowded, trying to open its doors.

"I'm happy that so many people came out (onto the streets) from the east (of the country) to Moscow," Navalny said, moments before he was detained.

Can i join Pro-Putin rally?i wud rather have that pro chess player Putin than a random puppet of west

. .
Yeah, yeah... it's gotta be the CIA, MOSAD and George Soros involved in it. It can't be the citizens who are unhappy of the fact that their country is an oligarhy (like the majority of the other ex-Warsaw pact countries) where an elite of ex Communist party and Secret service members control the majority of the economy of the whole country.

I really smell here CIA+MOSSAD rotten eggs. long live putin

You can all cry for conspiracy, that doesn't change the fact that corruption remains a significant problem in Russia. It is impacting every aspects of life, like in the public administrations, health, law enforcements, education etc. Any people have the right to protest against the massive corruption of their government and institutions like any sane person would do and to seek improvments.

how corrupt is the government?

At the last Corruption Perceptions Index of Transparency International (2016) Russia was ranked at the 131st position with a score of 29. Just to compare,Pakistan was ranked at the 116th position with a score of 32.

Admiring Russia shouldn't make everyone blind.

Funny how there were no "mass" protests when Yeltsin and his cronies were raping the country.

Eastern European countries like Russia, Ukraine, Belarus are corrupt as hell. Germany is corrupt too. Merkel is chancellor for life. West of Germany starting with France Asian genes few so democracy.

Yeltsin is now dead but his cronies are still raping the country... So what's the big difference?

It has been estimated that Putin is good for 70 B$ nowadays.
There is a reason why the Sotji Olympics were 3x as costly as the next most expensive,
and Putin apparently takes his percentage on each major deal.

Yes, they can easily arrange demonstrations in 100 cities in Russia.

Not to mention the fact that Russia had a state sponsored doping program that doped over 1,000+ Russian athletes. Russia corrupted the Sochi Olympics to its core. It's a joke that Russia is hosting the World Cup next year.

Also Qatar is hosting it in 2022... Petro-dollars can buy a lot of things. :D
