A Russian MiG-31 (Foxhound) interceptor successfully downed a cruise missile that was fired by a Tu-95MS (Bear) strategic bomber over the Pemboi Range in Russia’s northwestern region, the Russian Defense Ministry’s Central Military District’s press service said Thursday.


MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The aircraft are taking part in snap combat readiness drills in the Republic of Komi.

“The cruise missile was destroyed at an altitude of 300 meters above the ground from a distance of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) from the target.”

This capability is present in their arsenal for more than 2 decades (traces back to the soviet era).
With the addition of MiG-31BM it has only got refined.


A 100 of MiG-31 are planned for upgradation to the BM standard in the Russian air force , if memory serves me right.It is an MLU (just like our F-16s) which according to the Russian sources will be enough to serve their airforce for about 10 more years.After that, they'll be inducting a newly developed replacement to take over the role of interception from the MiG-31BM (during the window of 2025-2030).
