Russian Helicopters has reached an agreement with Egypt for modernising a facility to undertake advanced maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) of the Egyptian Air Force's Mil Mi-8T and Mil Mi-17-1V 'Hip' helicopters.
Under the agreement, the Helwan Factory for Developed Industries - part of the state-owned Arab Organisation for Industrialisation - will be retooled to provide repair work on the helicopters' frames, components, gears, and rotor systems.
Russian Helicopters will deliver the equipment for the modernisation of the production line and carry out commissioning work, provide design and technical support for Egyptian repair work for two years, and train Egyptian workers in Russia on overhaul work on the Mi-8T, Mi-17-1V, and Mi-17V-5 helicopters.
According to Russian Helicopters, the Egyptian Air Force operates 41 Mi-8T and three Mi-17-1V helicopters.
The Helwan Factory for Developed Industries was created in 1978, and manufactured the Airbus Helicopters (Eurocopter) SA 341/342 Gazelle through a licence-build agreement with Westland. The company has also previously undertaken MRO work on Mi-8 and Mi-17 helicopters.
