France has been feeding off GE's multibillion dollar R&D budget after World War II. Where did you think the war-ravaged French got their jet engines? Out of thin air?

I can't believe you claim the French have the engineering edge. They are a small country with a small R&D budget. Also, for your information, French jet engines are based on GE technology.

China's jet engine has also its root from the American P&W, but we have made a much bigger progression from the F100/F110 equivalent WS-10 to the F119 equivalent WS-15, while the French has not made much progression with their limited potential capability.

However, USSR had built a very robust military industry complex, and i don't think the post-WWII Germany has something remotely close to that.

The military technology is the true high-end technology compared to the civilian one, but you also need a good market system to link them together.

Russia and Germany represent two very different political dynamics, if you would like, so comparing them based on one GDP measurement is not very relevant, probably. They both have their areas of excellence, and weaknesses, like most other countries perhaps.

Are you talking about the Messoyakha Gas Field? If so, then you are talking about Methane hydrate gas trapped in a natural reservoir that the Russians began producing in the 70’s. They did not find an eco-friendly means of separating Methane, the separation occurred naturally over a period of time due to sub surface pressure. In 1978 they decided to wind down the operation. According to their surveys, they had sapped nearly all the methane from the deposit. But despite their estimates, the gas just kept on coming. The gas field was re-opened and continues to power Norilsk today.

Where was this methane coming from? Russian geologists initially thought it was leaking from another deposit hidden beneath the first. But their experiments revealed the opposite -- the mystery methane was seeping into the well from the icy permafrost above. If unintentionally, what they had achieved was the first, and so far only, successful exploitation of methane hydrate.

Even Reliance and Essar have procured equipments from Uralmash instead of Baker Hughes because uralmash drilling rigs are pretty good and reasonablly priced too and BP subsidiary TNK uses Uralmash rigs .

Are you implying Uralmash is better than Baker Hughes? Are they even competing in the same market segment? Baker Hughes provides Oilfield services such as logging, drilling and completions while Uralmash makes heavy equipment and rigs.

Wrong. Actually it depends on who is financing and supporting the development of new technologies. If we are talking about the USSR where just about every technological development, new or evolutionary, is considered to be of 'military value' until proven otherwise, then your assertion have some truth in it. But that is not how the West works. In the West, it is the civilian ventures who will lead in the development of new technologies and evolve the current ones, then the military will make adaptations to suit military needs. Spectacular programs like the Apollo moon missions, the Space Shuttle and the Internet were civilian in nature.

You can use any means to compare countries economies, but the simplest is common sense, and If the Russian economy is almost the same as the German one, than one has to take into account the Population numbers, than The PPP based on the GDP, will be clearer, the same applies for India versus Japan.
Economic science is not an exact science it is a bit like meteorology, with the economic fluctuations changing with the global events (winds).

Might pointing out some of the products that this complex produced?

Additionally, the "high end tech" was coming out of relocated factories behind the Urals. The absence of those factories today can tell you just one thing-they moved them back and not a lot of R&D was done in the immediate years post war.

Also in statistics..this is a reply to everyone...no single number can represent the true story, but a combination of numbers/stats can paint a pretty good picture.

And if you want to talk about Benz,I would recommend you check Kombat T98 and as there is no middle luxury segment car in the russian market .Its a luxury vehicle capable of withstanding an RPG built in EU and Russia,developed by Russians. call me when your luxury car segment has something similiar.As for MaRussia,its good but not up to the level of the Japanese or Italians.

Did you do a google search and post the first link huh? Maybe you should read on the depressurization technique which was pioneered on basis of the siberian hydrates in the 70's. And clearly methane hydrate gas does not exist.ITS METHANE TRAPPED IN ICE CRYSTALS/ICE.This was the field which led to the discovery of depressurization which is considered most economical

Holder and Angert proposed a methane-hydrate global depressurization model in which the heat of dissociation came from the sensible heat of the reservoir itself. Yousif et al. proposed a model similar to the Russian moving-boundary model, but allowed for a temperature gradient within the hydrated zone; this model, which has had some limited experimental confirmation, shows the inverse relationship of production with time, relative to the work of Verigin et al.

implies that the three phases were present in hydrate layer i.e. water,
gas and solid hydrate. It is poorly understood what might cause the

and Kowalsky, 2005). However, it is also suggested that hydrates at
Messoyakha were in a state of dissociation when the field was
discovered
(Makogon, 2007).
It should be pointed that there is a dearth of information on effect
of porous media on hydrate equilibrium behavior and it is not
understood fully. Moreover, there is no information available on the
capillary pressures and relative permeability in presence of hydrates at
Messoyakha. It might very well be possible that the co-existence of all
the three phases is affected by capillary pressures. Given these
constraints, this problem was simplified by assuming that in the hydrate
layer there is hydrate and gas and in the lower free gas layer, gas and
water. This simplification was necessary to initialize the model.
