A Russian cargo ship loaded with weapons is en route to Syria and due to arrive at a Syrian port this weekend, Al Arabiya television said in a report that Western diplomats in New York described on Friday as credible.

Syria is one of Russia's top weapons customers. The United States and European Union have suggested the U.N. Security Council should impose an arms embargo and other U.N. sanctions on Syria for its 14-month assault on a pro-democracy opposition determined to oust Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

But Russia, with the support of fellow veto power China, has prevented the council from imposing any U.N. sanctions on Syria and has refused to halt arms sales to Damascus.

"Al Arabiya have learned that a Russian cargo ship carrying a large amount of weapons plans to unload its cargo in the Syrian port of Tartus," the broadcaster said on its website on Thursday.

The report said the ship left a Russian port on May 6 and cited a "Western source" as saying that it will dock at Tartus on Saturday.

"The ship is trying to conceal its final destination in a suspicious way," Al Arabiya said.

Western diplomats and officials said the report was credible.

In a letter to the U.N. Security Council, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said he had seen reports of countries supplying arms to the government and rebels. He urged states not to arm either side in the Syrian conflict.

"Those who may contemplate supporting any side with weapons, military training or other military assistance, must reconsider such options to enable a sustained cessation of violence," he said.

Russia has defended its weapons deliveries to Syria in the face of Western criticism, saying government forces need to defend themselves against rebels receiving arms from abroad. Damascus says Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Libya are among the countries helping the rebels.

ARMS FOR ASSAD

One diplomat told Reuters that the vessel, which is called Professor Katsman, is owned by a Maltese firm, which is owned by a Cypriot company that is owned by Russian firm.

Diplomats said the Russian firm might have been acting on behalf of state arms exporter Rosoboronexport, though that was not clear. What is clear, they said, is that the weapons were intended to help Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, a staunch ally whom Moscow continues to support.

"I don't have any information on this ship, but our policy is not to comment on individual shipments, regarding contents or timing," a spokesman for Rosoboronexport, Vyacheslav Davidenko, said in Moscow.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said it did not have information that a ship was headed to Tartus with weapons and declined further comment.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland was asked about the Al Arabiya report at her daily briefing in Washington.

"I had not seen that report," she told reporters. "You know how strongly we feel that no country should be delivering weapons to the Assad regime now."

U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan has also urged countries not to supply weapons to either side in the conflict. Annan plans to visit Damascus soon, his spokesman said on Friday.

Not that surprising. Syria is Russia's last ally with direct access to the Mediterranean. It's highly important to russia strategically and a fall of the current government would almost certainly mean Russia will have a much more difficult time using Syria's ports.

No, it will mean Russia will never use Syria's ports and be completely kicked out from ME.
It had a chance at the beginning of the crises, but its way to late now.

hope russia arms syria and iran to the teeth.

Syria news has died down, I'm kind of hoping Assad speeds up the crackdown so it can end faster.

Syria ships naphtha to Venezuela, which sent diesel

A Venezuelan oil tanker is returning to Venezuela from Syria with a cargo of naphtha, shipping records showed on Thursday, after delivering badly needed diesel early this week as Western sanctions, causing severe shortages, hurt Syria's economy.

The tanker loaded a cargo of naphtha, a refined petroleum product that can be used to make petrol, from the Syrian port of Banias. Satellite tracking data shows the vessel is due to reach Amuay in Venezuela on June 12.

The Negra Hipolita is the third vessel to deliver diesel to Syria from Venezuela, while a fourth shipment is being prepared, Syria's state news agency said on Wednesday.

Venezuela angered Washington last year by supplying fuel to Iran, which is also subject to Western sanctions on fuel supplies.

The EU has taken steps to prevent firms from delivering diesel to Syria as it can be used to fuel heavy vehicles, including army tanks. Thousands of people have been killed in Syria during a year-long revolt against President Bashar al-Assad's rule, a conflict in which the military's use of heavy vehicles has been prominent.

Despite its chronic shortage of diesel, Syria has long had the appropriate refining capacity to be an exporter of naphtha.

Tighter EU sanctions introduced late in March made it more difficult for firms to deliver diesel to Syria without breaking the law, and imports of diesel have since ground to a near halt.

The standstill has exacerbated the pain felt by ordinary Syrians who have been grappling with shortages for months and particularly hurt those in agriculture who rely on heavy machinery for their livelihoods.

The scarcity of fuel is so severe farmers are resorting to using horses and mules, which is leading to huge increases in crop prices and affecting people across the country, according to non-governmental organization Avaaz.

On Wednesday, Syrian officials said discussions were under way to secure materials from Algeria and Iran.

Looks like now it's Algeria, Iran, Russia, Venezuela helping Syria.

With such statement, I'm sure you are qualified to join the Syrian army to support the babes' killers.

The Syrian Army has actually been fighting terrorists if any country had this problem they would do the same thing babies are just the causalities of war.

Are you blind or stupid? Look at the picture. The international monitors themselves said many of the children were butchered by knives. Is that what you consider casualty of war? 50 children massacred with knives in a single day in a small town. Any one who supports this deserve the same thing happen to his own children.

It's simple this is war you don't like it then go do something about it, there's noting stupid it's stupid on your part, Syria will keep doing what it has to regardless of what you think. I'm looking at the picture but do I really care ? Arabs have been murdering each other for years why should this be any different ? a bomb goes of in a market of iraq killing people children as well no one gives a hoot so why should this be any different ?

.
I use to sympathize with the Arab cause not anymore to much Al Jazeera propaganda I still sympathize with the Palestinians however the root of the problems in the Middle East Isn't Israel it's Arabs the religious divides look up the iraqi civil war or the egypt libya wars. the sad truth is more arabs have been murdered by their fellow arabs then anything israel has done. Israel isn't the problem it's the arabs and the muslim world has suffered due to Arab mistakes or their funding or radicalism.
