After India lodges protest, Russia stops China from handing its engines to Pak for fighters

NEW DELHI, AUGUST 12

Moscow has “frozen” a Chinese request for re-export of RD-93 engines, used to power the multi-role JF-17 fighter, to Pakistan. Two JF-17 fighters, handed over to Pakistan by China as part of a joint-venture agreement last March, have been returned to Beijing.
This will be conveyed by Russian Defence Minister Anatoly Serdyukov to National Security Advisor M K Narayanan when he lands in Moscow on August 28 for high-level defence dialogue.
Following up on talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the sidelines of the Heiligendamm G-8 meeting, Naryanan will discuss critical defence issues: Delay in upgradation of the Gorshkov aircraft carrier, cooperation in military applications of GLONASS (akin to the American GPS), price escalation in Su-30 MKI contract and the defence integrity pact.
Prime Minister’s Special Envoy Shyam Saran landed in Moscow today to seek Russia’s support at the Nuclear Suppliers Group after the successful completion of the Indo-US 123 agreement. Saran is on a 10-day mission that will be taking him to Berlin, Brasilia and Buenos Aires to garner support of NSG members. Last year, Narayanan was informed by the Russians that they would not allow China to re-export RD-93 engines to Pakistan. Beijing has a contract with Moscow to get supplies of 100 RD-93 engines with options of another 400.
But China went ahead and gave Pakistan two RD-93 equipped JF-17 fighters for its annual air force day in March. This had the Indians protesting to Russia that the Chinese had violated the end-user agreement. The Chinese, on their part, informed the Russians that there was no clause restricting the re-export of engines in the contract signed during the Yeltsin regime in 1992.
Not wanting to upset India, the Russians told the Chinese that re-export of RD-93 engines was not allowed without Moscow’s permission.

Oh My God, Here we go again guys'. Please, take this report with a pinch of salt, this same thing happened last time. Just a few weeks ago Mr. Putin himself signed the contract with China of buying more engines and with permission to export them to Pakistan.

And what I found humorous is his claim of 2 JF-17s returning to Pakistan, LOl. What, he should know is that we have a source on PakDef who's an insider and said this is a baseless claim, and the planes are in Pakistan (PS: This is source who first reported of the planes land, and going through repainting also).

PS: Isn't this the journalist that Indians accuse of being dum1b. Cause I have lost track over the years.

Dude you guys are buying what IE is telling you on defence? Even we dont buy a single piece they says.

still nothing else on google news.

maybe they made an error and reprinted an old news?

Seems like Anatoly always keeps saying things to please Indians and Putin speaks in favor of Pak.

Hey guys if this makes our indian fans happy why to burst their bubble now.

if you guys remember Muradk comments about JF17 arrival on march 23, he said they will go back to China. Reason unknown.
But anyway if its true then pending contract of 126 latest planes, goes to Russian..

Simple, JF-17 is going forward with tech enhancement (e.g. cruising range and avionics), you believe it or not.

Ie any such thing is there then China must act straightforwardly with Russia to stop such nasty game. China is a very very big market for russian products and specially the defence products.

well Russia has no match with chinese economy. Even Hongkong fiscal budget is equal or little more then Russian whole defence budget.

back to the topic.

we already know that China had placed the order for 1000 Russian engines.
We also know that the purchase is partially for the assembly line work in Pakistan.

now will Russia risk losing a great business and play variance on China?
would China be so unadvisable, even after a referential engine issue few months ago, to sign any contract which can not ensure the buyer's rights of relocation of those engines?

Since last few years China is not Russia big ticket customer. Since they stop buying more plane, develop the Russian planes, for example SU27 has been fully assemble and modified by Chinese and same with SU30. After development of J10, Chinese are not looking any other direction. Even new attack helos are develop too. So, since last few years huge cut in defence purchases from Russia. China is now more interested in western defence items.
India has no defence infrastructure compare to rival China. They have no choice just to buy from Russia.

Indian Express is being run by trolls. Please avoid pasting any news from them on this site.

Thanks.
