MOSCOW, July 18 (Xinhua) -- Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) said Monday it has prevented a major terror attack on the capital city.

According to local press, FSB director Alexander Bortnikov reported to President Dmitry Medvedev that the security service has detained four men who came to Moscow from an unspecified location in the North Caucasus and have been preparing an attack on the city's transportation system.

He did not disclose how the suspects were found and arrested, but said a self-made 10-kg bomb, maps and weapons were seized, adding that all the detained men have already confessed.

According to the FSB, over the past six months, a total of 169 terror-linked crimes have been committed in Russia, which was 58 percent less than last year.

Most of the crimes have occurred in the North Caucasus republic of Dagestan.

FSB said it has prevented another 52 terror attacks in the first half of 2011, seizing 280 self-made bombs and over 500 kg explosives. Moreover, the security services arrested some 400 terrorists and killed 250 other militants.

In these operations FSB lost 95 officers and 200 were wounded, Bortnikov said.

In January, suicide bombers from the North Caucasus region detonated a bomb in Moscow's Domodedovo international airport, killing 37 people. Last year, two female bombers from the same region set off twin blasts in Moscow metro during morning rush hour, killing 40 people.
