HEILIGENDAMM: Russia plans a "totally effective" response to any deployment of a US anti-missile system, but will not necessarily aim weapons at European cities, the Kremlin spokesman said Wednesday.

"It will be totally effective from the point of view of ensuring our security," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters at the Group of Eight summit in Germany.

The targeting of Europe, referred to by President Vladimir Putin in an interview ahead of the G8, would only be "one of the possible means" to respond, he said via a conference telephone call.
Russia has been infuriated by a US plan to deploy an anti-missile system in Poland and the Czech Republic, two former Soviet bloc states.

Russia says it believes it is a target of the system while Washington insists the defence is to guard against an attack by unfriendly states such as North Korea or Iran.

Peskov said Moscow does not accept US assurances or offers to allow inspections of the proposed sites.

"The problem is we are talking about American weapons in eastern Europe," he said. "Inspection is not solving the problem."

Putin was asked whether the US deployment would mean a return to Cold War days when Soviet nuclear missiles were targeted at European cities. Putin replied, "Of course. We, of course, will return to those times.

"If the US nuclear potential extends across the European territory, we will have to get new targets in Europe," Putin said.

Seems like the Cold War and nuclear arms race is starting all over again. Russia with 'new money' may not be a communist country anymore she's still US' archrival and will claim her place in world order.
Welcome back to Bi-polar world!

Russia is in the cuurent form only due to gas prices, somewhat like Saudi. They dont have qualioty enterprises to tackle US in other spheres. China is definitly a better bet in that case.

They are however utilizing that new found money very judiciously, the money is being sent back into military R&D, they are completely modernizing their armed forces, etc, etc.

to reach Ameirca thos emissiles have to go over Europe or Canada (Britian) so whats the differance, and isn't that kinda hyprocritcal? Russia's big complaint is that depsite iran's missile trajectory going over the proposed AMS sites its a threat that must be countered.

But hey, Putin saved America by insuring the continuing dollar hegemony and forgien buying of US Pulbic debt.

Russia can do jack, MAD is already there Russia can do the extreme cannot sustain the mid-treme.

What would be a blow to the world that would love to see Us-Russia conflict is if US agreed to Russias plans to share the missile defence base using a Radar base from USSR times which is placed in central asia, as of 2006 reports it is operational.

Definitely setting up a BMD base in US, has irked Russia, and that is natural given the intentions does not fits in US bills in the same time it is useless for US to station to stand 10 intercetors and try to stop Russias BM's.

But Russia wants to ensure there wont be expansion in future by maknig it a JV.

A JV serves concerns of both.
