MOSCOW (Reuters) -- Russia may tighten retaliatory sanctions against Western nations to include a ban on imports of cars, if the United States and the European Union impose additional sanctions on Moscow, the Vedomosti daily newspaper reported today.

Following Russia's standoff over Ukraine, Western nations imposed sanctions on Moscow including on its financial and energy sectors, and put dozens of Russians close to President Vladimir Putin on a sanctions list.

Russia, which denies allegations it is arming separatist rebels in eastern Ukraine, may fully or partly ban imports of cars, the Vedomosti newspaper said, citing sources.

Imported vehicles accounted for 27 percent of sales of passenger cars in the first half of 2014, while truck imports accounted for 46 percent, and 13 percent for buses, according to Vedomosti.

Overall car sales in Russia dropped 5.5 percent to 2.6 million last year, according to data from the Moscow-based Association of European Businesses. Problems associated with the Ukraine conflict and a weak ruble have led the AEB to revise its 2014 outlook for the market from a 1.6 percent decline to a 12 percent drop this year.

Domestic production

The new ban would not apply to foreign automakers' production inside Russia, the paper said. Ford Motor Co., Volkswagen Group, Renault, Toyota Motor Corp. and Hyundai Motor Co. are among automakers with production facilities inside Russia.

The paper added that proposals for new measures had already been sent to Putin for consideration but that no decision had been taken to prepare any new sanctions yet.

New trade restrictions are possible in the event Western nations impose additional sanctions on Moscow, the paper added.

Russia has imposed a ban on certain agricultural imports from the European Union, the United States, Australia, Canada and Norway.

It has also said the government could introduce protective measures in aircraft, shipbuilding and automotive industries.

. . . . . .
The NATO homosexuals arent going to sanction Russia anymore. Theyve been punched in the face. They got a taste of their own medicine and they are scared shitless right now. They want no part of any sanctions. Russia is far more important to the EU economy than the EU is to the Russian Economy. This is something Putin knew very well but the stupid puppets in nato didnt seem to understand until now.

There will be no more united eu sanctions. None. The bullies have started to learn their lesson. Putin put fear in their hearts.

. .
The sanctions are a straw man set up by the governments to blame for the EU's economic woes.
It's too early for any sanctions to have had any measurable effect yet and most of them have loopholes. The energy sector is yet to be sanctioned and I suspect it never will be. The sanctions are a mere token effort.

Germany still has sold 4 million cars in China back in 2013.

If China is doing the same, then it is going to be the end of the world for them.

Hmm they have been doing pretty good for 80 years without selling many to Russia or China. Big sales is only a very recent development.

.
Has there been more sanctions from the US? The US had almost no trade with Russia to begin with.

Well duh. Trade between China and the US has only been a few decades. Heck, China existed for thousands of years before the US was born in 1783.

.
Germanys entire economy is based on their auto industry. And Germany is the most powerful member of the EU. Putin and his people are brilliant. I mean they knew exactly the right pressure point to squeeze. Germany cant affor to lose Russian markets, not even for one year. Their economy is the only thing propping up the eu. No other country in the eu really has anything anybody wants or needs. If Germany starts to slip, it will cause a domino effect that will devastate the eu economy. While Russia buys Asian cars and China gets a gdp boost.

In the mean time

Following a summit in Brussels, a senior NATO diplomat proudly proclaimed that 'allies' have pledged more spending and will beef up its presence in Eastern Europe. However, likely to the chagrin of President Obama (and the West's narrative), he let slip some uncomfortable truths:

  • *NATO DIPLOMAT SAYS PUTIN HOLDS TACTIAL SHORT-TERM CARDS (hhmm, ok)
  • *NATO DIPLOMAT SAYS LONG-TERM GEOPOLITICAL TRENDS FAVOR THE WEST (phew...)
  • *NATO DIPLOMAT SAYS PUTIN WON'T BE AROUND FOREVER (threat or warning?)
So, all the west has to do is be patient? Wait out Putin? We suspect that 'strategy' may get accelerated at some point.

NATO Admits Putin Holds "Short-Term Cards", But "Won't Be Around Forever" | Zero Hedge

I mean they cant even deny it themselves. Putin is a Grand Master Strategist and he just sonned all of Nato without firing one shot.

You havent the slightest notion what you are talking about. In order for Germany to maintain its current position ( even though its already started to slip because of heavy asian competition ) they need ever increasing markets. They cant afford a market as large as Russia to slip away. Not even for one quarter. This threat doesnt need anymore threats. The germans will not risk it. Even if herr merkel would agree, the business interests that put her in power would never allow it.
