the Mi-35 , along with armaments can carry 8 troops on board as well , it was always designated as an attack/transport helicopter gunship

Consider this scenario , gunship has to provide air cover to convoys , supposing if convoy gets hit , gunship can engage the attackers and after neutralizing the threat can drop on board troops and evacuate any injured personnel at the same time , an attack only or transport only heli cannot do this

Pakistan has always been in an unusual position. In the beginning we shifted towards america and became dependent on them for supplies while india held a neutral position but chose russia for supplies. Now our relations with usa are not as good as india's relation with russia. We have had many times when usa stopped supply for various reasons eg 65 war which made us weaker in 71. And also india's relation with russia has stopped us from buting from then because indian pressure can stop supplies anytime. The good thing is china. Hopefully chinese industry would match the russian and american one day

Mi24/35 is basically based on Mi-8/17 and Chinese got license productions rights and producing now Mi17s
PAA has over 60 Mi17s, with commonality and future prospects make sense

a sqdn of 10-12 Mi-35 for 150-200 Mil vs. 1B for western helo is no comparision

"Of the 138 aircraft ordered from foreign manufacturers in
the last 10 years, 80% have been Russian -made Mil Mi-17 Hip
transport helicopter variants purchased to address the lack of an indigenous medium helicopter
design. An assembly line for the type opened in China in
2008 to provide a further 20 helicopters a year."

anyone have any updates ? I'm also curious to know if Pakistan will thumb their nose at the US's sanctions and go ahead with this procurement anyway, if it's happening in the first place.

No, this news came after years of working with Russians and PA need them now as they are needed for COIN ops, they will come in secondary role when it comes to hunting IA armor.
