The Ukraine crisis may have settled into a phony truce, but the still-simmering conflict between Russia and the West has opened along a new front: McDonald's restaurants.

The Russian government appears to be waging a stealth campaign against the world's most famous fast food franchise, closing branches en masse, in what appears to be retaliation against the United States over its support of Ukraine's government in the ongoing conflict there.

The Russian site Yopolis sifted through news reports to find each example of a Russian McDonald's shuttering. Each dot represents a McDonald's with a closure or potential closure: the yellow dots show McDonald's closed for upgrades or renovations; legal violations have been reported at orange dot McDonald's; and at least one McDonald's has been shut down at the red dots. The number over the dot indicates the number of branches affected:

That's a lot of McDonald's. Now, surely at least some of these must be totally unrelated to politics — the branches shuttered for maintenance, for instance. But there's an awful lot of orange and red on that map.

The most famous such shuttered McDonald's is in Pushkin Square in Moscow. It was the first McDonald's to open in Russia after the fall of the Soviet Union. According to the New York Times, it was the world's busiest McDonald's for many years. It was also one of the first to be shut down in the current spate of McDonald's closings.

Ostensibly, these McDonald's are being closed for health reasons. But analysts are skeptical.

"Russia has a tendency to ban foreign products, particularly food, for political reasons," National Journal's Marina Koren writes. The closures are designed, she says, "to send a message to the US and the Russians they may be trying to reach: The West is not welcome here." Starting with the Pushkin Square Mickey D's made that point, especially to Russians who remember the location's symbolic importance as a mark of the Cold War's end and of America's victory.

In purely economic terms, the war on McDonald's is, like so much of Russia's recent lashing out at the West, mostly self-defeating. There are give-or-take 437 McDonald's in Russia and they purchase about 85 percent of their supplies from Russian companies. So the anti-McDonald's campaign is, in a way, a microcosm of Putin's entire approach to the Ukraine crisis: damn the economic costs, full speed ahead on aggressive nationalist symbolic gestures.

*My comments;

I hate McDonald's as much as the next guy, but respect people right to choose where they dine. Additionally, these closures aren't going to harm the US. The products, the workers, each are Russian... this stupid backlash against "the west" is putting innocent Russians out of work to make a political point. Both sides of this conflict have made dumb decisions, but Russia's have been mostly self-harming.

Nothing new. The food ban against EU food products did not hurt the EU but made food prices in russia explode. Same here. The problem is that russia is ruled from old KGB farts. They give a shit about their people.

The Russian food ban has actually been helping prices here in the US, though prices in Russia haven't risen too much either given the products that were missing from the ban have largely been replaced by Russian products (take cheeses as an example). Still purely self-defeating for Russia while beneficial for US consumers and Europeans.

War against freedom fries!

War away my friend! China is just as capitalistically inclined as the US and you have a choice to buy what is available and affordable to you. I'll buy foreign products over US made ones if I can get better quality for a similar price, I would expect your preferences dictate you habits as well. War away.

Good, entire EU should get rid of this disgusting artificial crap!
Unhealthy and highly unmoral food chain for working conditions and the slavery payment the employees recieve, just disgusting from top to the toe.

Unhealthy? Damn right! amoral? No. I too dislike their inclination to pay a small wage, don't think their workers are treated too unfairly, but no one forces a person to work anywhere... unless they are mandated to perform labor while in prison. My sympathy for workers largely ends when they choose to work at the location of their choice. I still hate their "food" (if you can call it that) and avoid McD's like the plague.

I always try to buy from domestic manufacturers or eat at local restaurants.

I'm sure foreign stuff is good too, but since I have a choice I might as well spend my money to help the domestic economy.

I never ate at McDonalds and its not my kind of food, they are in decline in EU anyways but my sympathy for their workers is small. If you work there and dont like working comditions as well as payment you can just quit there and take a job that you prefer.

so does that mean that i as a european should avoid chinese products and stick to our own stuff?

Why not, if you feel that is a patriotic thing to do.

Paying a bit more for domestic goods is a great thing in my opinion. Though of course most people buy simply on the basis of cost/value, which is why it's better to be competitive than to rely on people being patriotic.

And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that at all. I'm the same. I drive a European car, own Japanese electronics, but will try to "buy American" when ever possible to support domestic manufacturers. Russian's will buy Russian, Chinese will buy Chinese, Japanese will buy Japanese, so on and so forth. It's a respectable practice to support your countrymen and women.

Banning of McDonalds started before that robbery of a millioniare by italy. And it is not viciously fight it is retaliation and you can not blame russians for countering sanctions for retarded phony sanctions by USA and submissive NATO vassals for BRICS and refusing of Dollar.

And whishing disgusting fascists to have nukes that are controlled by the US already shows how degenerated the society in Romania is, completley indoctrinated trying to steer up shit against a Nuclear Power, but lick the arses of the EU further your living standards are decreasing anyway with FIAT Euro.

Well America did promise to "protect Ukraine's territorial sovereignty" in exchange for Ukraine giving up their nukes in 1994.
