It works fine. The Chinese one is not even good enough to be tested on a carrier yet.

Does a US carrier have the capability to defend itself from China's anti - carrier weapon? DF 21? 🤔

It only has a range of 1300 miles. Why would we need to defend against it?

Please don't say you expect the carrier to get close to China so it can get pummeled by every Air Force bomber China has.

Even in WW2 with slow propeller planes getting within 500 miles of Japan was considered incredibly dangerous for a carrier. That's why we had to island hop.

... just in case the carrier ever needs to be in South China Sea?

During wartime? Why?

Most ships are not much faster than those in WW2...meanwhile jets can fly at close to 1800 miles an hour. You'd certainly want time to react so you aren't going to get much closer than that.

Seems like F 35 range is less than 1500 miles. So I think that is possible that carrier may have to get within range of this missile during wartime.

The US does have 11 aircraft carriers, however, 6, maybe 7 carriers are operational/deployed at any given time, the others being in port for depot maintenance and/or refit. The US Navy maintains a 6+1 fleet goal, meaning that at least six carriers are deployed or able to deploy within 30 days and an additional one able to deploy in 90 days.
And Yes but don't forget it's not just carriers but the battle groups that accompany them.

Technically speaking, I can call a fly swatter a 'carrier killer'.

But seriously, the issue is whether the missile can counter the countermeasures the carrier and its fleet already have. In order for the DF missile to work as China advertised, the carrier would have to sit still and literally do nothing. But the moment the carrier starts to move and its escorts begin countermeasures, the probability of kill (pk) also begins to move away from %100. China claimed that the DF can hit a moving target. Fine. But what if that moving target is below an EM/IR umbrella that is literally thousands of km square area?

Most people thinks the fleet combat formation is this...

But it is not possible to take a picture of the real combat array, so we have this representation...

We are looking at every escort created an EM/IR field to interrupt sensor targeting from any airborne aircraft and missile.

I think it is possible that China will launch multiple missiles in quick succession to strike a carrier. Perhaps some of 'em could have ECCM capability. It would be interesting if that is possible 🤔
