Black Sea Fleet's large landing ships shoot "hostile" coastal targets in Crimea

On Wednesday, special units of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) completed the first stage of large-scale drills in Crimea. Spetsnaz forces neutralized simulated enemy forces that captured a drilling rig and 150 hostages.

The maneuvers involved combat swimmers and paratroopers as well as armored vehicles, amphibious boats, drones and advanced reconnaissance equipment.

"The results of the first stage of the exercise prove that FSB special purpose units are well prepared for counterterrorist missions at maritime facilities of different types," the FSB reported in a statement for media.

A total of 2,000 servicemen will be involved in the three-stage drills, which are scheduled to end on May 29. The second stage of the drills will take place at a resort complex in Yevpatoria. The final stage will include training activities in coastal and mountain and woody areas.

Spetsnaz drills in Crimea are a response to the current challenges and threats, first of all coming from Ukraine, including sabotage activities and terrorist attack attempts in Crimea, according to Ruslan Balbek, a member of the Russian State Duma from Crimea.

According to the lawmaker, the Russian Special Forces prove they are ready to respond to all kinds of threats, protecting Crimean residents and visitors.

Alexander Zhilin, head of the Center for Social Aspects of National Security, underscored the importance of such an exercise can hardly be overestimated.

"Our special forces are practicing repelling attacks on different kinds of facilities in Crimea. But the number one task is to protect people from terrorist attacks. This is why it is difficult to overestimate the importance of these drills. It is important that special forces units practice preventing sabotage activities. Everyone in Crimea can feel safe because security measures trained in real life are very reliable," Zhilin told Radio Sputnik.

The first stage of the drills took place at oil-producing facilities of the company Chernomorneftegaz. The company said that its drilling platforms are high-risk facilities.

"FSB special units are practicing possible sabotage activities by Ukraine. There have been several incidents," one of the company’s representative told journalists.

Russian military, security expert and journalist Boris Rozhin said that Kiev has repeatedly organized provocations in the area.

"Since Ukraine does not recognize Crimea as part of Russia Kiev has claims for Chernomorneftegaz’s drilling rigs. There have been a number of provocations. For example, last year a Ukrainian reconnaissance plane flew in the area and reportedly came under fire. Later, the incident was used by Kiev for a massive information campaign. Possibly, there will be new provocations in order to escalate the situation," he said in an interview with Radio Sputnik.

According to the expert, the current drills of FSB special forces units are very important.

"Countermeasures are needed to prevent provocations. These drills are not only about training. They have a practical goal. In order to prevent new provocations, Russia should demonstrate that it is ready to respond with force to any aggressive attempts," Rozhin concluded.

Russian Black Sea Fleet ships carried out head-on naval engagements as part of ongoing drills in the Mediterranean, Black Sea Fleet spokesman Capt. 1st Rank Vyacheslav Trukhachev said Friday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The drill is part of the tactical training of a division of Russian Black Sea Fleet's ships.

"Five warships within two groupings conducted a head-on sea battle and exercises on radiation, chemical and biological protection of ships," Trukhachev told reporters.

These elements were worked out "after conducting the first stages of the escort operation, training in organizing collective defense against enemy air attacks, anti-submarine and anti-sabotage defense."

The drills are set to end on May 27.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – An aviation unit deployed in Crimea will receive new Mi-35 attack helicopters in the near future and will be fully equipped with modern helicopters by the end of 2017, spokesman of Russia's Southern Military District Col. Vadim Astafyev said Wednesday.

"The aviation unit of the 4th Air and Air Defense army’s aviation, deployed in Crimea will get the newest Mi-35 attack and transport helicopters. The unit of the army aviation is set to be 100 percent provided with the newest samples of aviation equipment in 2017," Astafyev said.

Astafyev noted that Commander of Russia’s Southern Military District Col. Gen. Alexander Dvornikov had previously checked if there was a sufficient number of attack and transport helicopters, and assessed the capacity of the helicopters in service, which included, among others, the Mi-28NE combat helicopter, Ka-52 Alligator attack helicopter and Mi-8 helicopters.

The goal of Dvornikov’s trip to the Crimean aviation unit was to check the operational readiness of the Black Sea Fleet and 4th Air and Air Defense army, according to Astafyev.

Crimea rejoined Russia in 2014, after 97 percent of Crimean residents supported the reunification at a regional referendum. Kiev and the West, however, have refused to recognize the results of the referendum.

SIMFEROPOL. June 23 (Interfax) - The Feodosia oil depot could be actively used to handle oil products delivered to Crimea by tankers from other regions of Russia, and this would stabilize or even lower fuel prices on the Black Sea peninsula, the Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) proposed.

"We need to sort out internal Russian problems regarding the arrangement of shipments of oil products [to Crimea] bypassing the infrastructure of Russian Railways (RZD) (MOEX: RZHD), for example, by using the infrastructure of the Feodosia oil depot and tanker shipments. The regional authorities must make every effort to reasonably ensure the operation of the Feodosia oil depot, [resolve] issues related to licensing of tanks," the head of fuel and energy sector regulation at FAS, Dmitry Makhonin said on Thursday.

"If this happens, the infrastructure [of the depot] could be used for handling oil products through tanker shipments, which would save on logistical costs and have a positive impact on the price of products at filling stations," Makhonin told reporters in Simferopol after meeting with representatives of the Crimean government, major filling station chains, oil traders and state company Chernomorneftegaz.

He estimated that the depot is currently operating at just 10% of capacity. "This is one of the biggest depots in the country, with capacity to store about 280,000 tonnes of oil products. It grieves us that this resource is not being utilized, it is being used at just 10% or even less, and there are no conditions for storing automobile gasoline," Makhonin said.

Fuel is currently shipped to Crimea via the Kerch ferry crossing. Gasoline prices at filling stations on the peninsula are higher than the Russian national average, partly due to logistics.

Makhonin also said that the margin at filling stations in Crimea is 5%-7% higher than the margin in neighboring Krasnodar Territory and Rostov Region.

Russian Air Force conducts missile launches and air bombardment during Crimean drills. Warplanes successfully hit aerial and ground objects near the Opuk range on the peninsula.

MOSCOW, (Sputnik) — Russia's Black Sea Fleet Naval Air Force, aircraft from Russia's Southern Military District's Air Force and Air Defense Force deployed in Crimea have carried out missile launches and air bombardment during a military exercise on the peninsula, the Fleet's Information Department Head Capt. 1st Rank Vyacheslav Trukhachev said Thursday.

"Today, during the tactical flight training of units of Black Sea Fleet Naval Air Force, servicemen of the Southern Military District's Air Force and Air Defense Force, deployed in Crimea, the pilots accomplished tasks to hit aerial and land targets in the area near the Opuk range," Trukhachev said.

Previous drills in Crimea were held last summer with the Russian Black Sea Fleet puting its naval and coastal defense units on high alert. The Russian Fleet's impromptu drills came amid Sea Breeze 2017, large-scale Black Sea naval drills co-hosted by the United States and Ukraine involving air, land, naval and amphibious forces.

With Turkey having flipped over the US and gone with the S-400, Russia has very little to fear regarding Crimea/Ukraine. There's no way Turkey is allowing a Black Sea operation against Russia through the Turkish Straights, which only leaves the European/land route and explains the recent large-scale exercises with Belarus.

Russia said on Friday it had detained two of its citizens including a member of the armed forces who allegedly passed Ukraine military secrets on the Black Sea naval fleet based in Moscow-annexed Crimea. The FSB security service said in a statement that it had detained a man who was serving as a conscript in the Russian armed forces in Crimea and a woman. It said the pair “had been gathering and passing to the Ukrainian special services information that is a state secret about the activities of the units and divisions of the Black Sea naval fleet” based in Crimea.

The FSB said it had opened a criminal case into treason, which is punishable by a maximum jail term of 20 years. Russia regularly announces it has foiled attempts to undermine its rule in Crimea, annexed from Ukraine in 2014 in a move condemned internationally. In August, the FSB said it had captured an alleged Ukrainian agent who was planning acts of sabotage including blowing up power lines.

Ukrainian film director and scriptwriter Oleg Sentsov was sentenced in 2015 to 20 years in a Russian prison colony on terrorism charges over arson attacks in Crimea.
