Brasilia: Reaffirming the need for a comprehensive reform of the United Nations to make it "more effective and efficient", Russia and China today said they understand and support the aspirations of India and Brazil to play a greater role in the world body.

The BRIC countries -- Brazil, Russia, India and China -- also expressed their strong commitment to multilateral diplomacy with the United Nations playing the central role in dealing with global challenges and threats.

In a joint communique issued after the Summit here, the four countries said they reaffirm the need for a comprehensive reform of the UN, with a view to making it more effective, efficient and representative, so that it can deal with today's global challenges more effectively.

"We reiterate the importance we attach to the status of India and Brazil in international affairs, and understand and support their aspirations to play a greater role in the United Nations," the joint communique said.

The four-nation grouping also reiterated the importance of the UN Millennium Declaration and the need to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

"We underscore the importance of preventing a potential setback to the efforts of poor countries aimed at achieving MDGs due to the effects of the economic and financial crisis.

"We should also make sustained efforts to achieve the MDGs by 2015, including through technical cooperation and financial support to poor countries in implementation of development policies and social protection for their populations," the joint communique said.

The four countries said they expect the UN MDG Summit in September 2010 to promote the implementation of MDGs through policy recommendations.

"We stress that sustainable development models and paths of developing countries should be fully respected and necessary policy space of developing countries should be guaranteed," they said.

Noting that poorest countries have been the hardest hit by the economic and financial crisis, the communique said the commitments regarding the aid to the developing states, especially those related to the MDGs, should be fulfilled, and there should be no reduction in development assistance.

"An inclusive process of growth for the world economy is not only a matter of solidarity but also an issue of strategic importance for global political and economic stability," they said.

The Chinese and American will never fully support India bid for the UNSC. Americans like being the world "police" so anything to dilute their power at the UN will not be welcome. China while right now is not on par with the US in term of hard and soft power, see itself as on par with the US in the not too distant future. China also will not want it power to be diluted.

France and the UK are just the US' lap poodle.

In the today's geopoilitics India have the same clout as Sri Lanka. Seriously, how can India be given veto power if she have next to nil influence even in her backyard.

Is the West consulting with India about Iran? India is literally Iran's next door neighbour.

Even though the economy of India is growing, it still have very little Impact on the world in relative terms. If the Indian economy disapear today, the world wouldn't miss a beat.

Sorry but power is taken not given. France, Russia and UK can support India's bid all they want, in the end India will have to earn it.

Sooner or later US will have to agree with India and allow a Permanent UNSC seat for us.

And I get a feeling its gonna be before 2020.

So . We're gonna get it. They can't ignore the second fastest growing economy and the biggest democracy on earth for long.

The US ignore Japan for the longest time. And only recently they "wanted and nominated" japan for the UNSC because they knwo China will just flat out refuse. Japan had been the 2nd biggest economy for decades.

Yes. US has been the grand daddy for quite a long period. But now its facing tough competition and that's why it needs to curb us till the time it can.

China, Russia, Japan and India has developed very nicely over the past decades and will someday tilt the power towards the east. That day would be very hard for the US. The US will do anything to avoid that day. Expect a Soviet type breakdown of one of the above countries. ;)

That is one silly thing you said bro. India's GDP is the size of Russia's at the moment and at the pace it is increasing will overtake several major economies in the coming decade.

Also the whole developed world community today earns most of its revenues from exports and not domestic sales. These countries export to developing countries to earn billions. If India would disappear today, the developed world would lose the biggest arms importer, biggest open market, cheap labor, and most of all the lose the potential that a billion of us hold.

I am not talking about the "future". India can be the top dog in 30 years or something instability goes wrong and India can go backwards.

India holds roughly $60 billion in US debt, a spit in the ocean.
Cheap labour is already abadunce in China, Indonesia and soon to be Africa.

estimate that India will spend $100 billions USD within the next 10 years on defense. $10 billion a year is again a drop in the bucket.

you are seriously under estimating India here.
India's annual defense budget is $32 billion.

Also debt doesn't show the real picture. India is too important at this point in time. US, Japan, EU have all invested heavily in India.

India ranks 4th in terms of GDP (ppp) and 12th in terms of GDP(nominal).

India's purchasing power is more than Germany, UK, France, Russia, Brazil and even Canada. Only Japan, China and US are ahead of us in purchasing power parity.

That speaks volume I guess.

:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

ur quite funny and silly at the same time

Ok tell me one place in the world outside of India where India has significant influence.

The Americans are running afghanistan. The Chinese have basically trumped India in Bangledesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Burma.

India is playing catch up in her own neighbourhood.

Japan is still waiting for India to become a major palyer in Asia for obvious reason.

I agree with your comments above, even if that is based on Rupee news article.

$32 billions is still a drop in the bucket. Getting back to the topic here. Japan had all the money in the world, a democracy and one of US closest ally. Yet for all that worth it was enver close to getting a UNSC seat.

Simply put, Japan foreign policy has always look like the US because the American basically told Japan what to do internationally.

If India falls in line(like voting against Iran) this will look good in the eyes of the Americans, but it will only reiterate the fact that India doesn't have any choice but to fal in line.
