On Tuesday, China, Pakistan and Russia met in Moscow to discuss Afghanistan's "deteriorating" security situation, despite strong protests from the Afghan government. The three countries relented towards the end of the day's discussions and said that they would expand the group to include Afghanistan the next time. There is already a move to induct Iran into this group.

Nandan Unnikrishnan, Russia analyst at Observer Research Foundation, said, "In the present context of limited communication between India and Russia, Russia's actions could lead to a drift in relations." India only recently reaffirmed its ties with Russia by announcing almost $10 billion in defence purchases from Moscow.

The statement issued at the end of the meeting said, "The Russian Federation and the People's Republic of China as the UN Security Council permanent members confirmed their flexible approach to delisting Afghan individuals from the UN sanctions lists as their contribution to the efforts aimed at launching peaceful dialogue between Kabul and Taliban."

This could, if Russia and China press ahead, and if the US does not block, result in the removal of some top Taliban leaders from the UNSC sanctions list. Afghanistan, incidentally, has asked for the new Taliban chief to be included in the list.

Conspicuous by its absence at the meet was India, which continues to hold Taliban as the biggest threat in Afghanistan. Besides India, the Afghan government and the US both agree to this.

The Afghan government is currently going through its own political crisis, with the two key leaders of the unity government, Presi dent Ashraf Ghani and CEO Abdullah Abdullah, at loggerheads. The US, which has 9,800 troops in a counter-terrorism role is unsure of how it will utilise its presence in Afghanistan under a Trump administration.

India is holding on to the "red lines" for integration of Taliban into the Afghan government but that seems to be getting diluted by the new axis, which is less Afghan-led and more Pakistan-led, putting Pakistan once again in the driver's seat on Afghanistan's future.

Iran, which has been doing its own outreach to Taliban, is equally apprehensive of the fallout of IS cadres relocating to Afghanistan as they get driven out of Syria and Iraq.

This is essentially a return to the good-Taliban, bad-Taliban argument, as everybody wants to do a peace settlement in Afghanistan. India will remain out of this move yet again. Russia is looking for two things -an opening to Pakistan and a lever against IS that Moscow believes could be at its doorstep, given Russians form the largest group of IS fighters.

The last time Russia was on India's side. But this time, Russia says its more worried about the IS than about losing India's friendship.

good bye india and good ridance

India has no place in the Afghanistan problem. It just muddies the water. Another failed NATO attempt. Couldn't win a war and come out with stupid ideas such as these. Failed military force.

For peace in Afghanistan to happen, her stakeholders are her neighbors and themselves who need to make key decisions.

India isn't interested in any ties with the Taliban, no matter how fruitful it is, Taliban are a lunatic bunch of medieval cave rats.

How very principled. India should deepen its ties with child-rapists and drug-smugglers to eradicate those barbaric cave rats.

Russia is there to fight ISIS but not to fill someone's starving bowl.Afghanistan would be the next battleground if ISIS is pushed out of Syria & Iraq completely.
If Russia hurts Indian policies beyond the line then it's time for India to make a strategic shift & pull back all R&D money..We will get to see how long they sustain.

At this point ,I doubt they care . Its not pakistan or india for them . Its about stopping ISIS . If Pakistanis fratenize with IS ,then Russia will bomb them also. As for India , India made that shift in 2010-11 .

The wahabbi culture that spans large part of islam is child marriage or like human rights like to say child raping. But if the family of the child is supported by the marriage partner and is not cruel ,I do not see any issue and is a personal matter.

India backed Northern Alliance child molesting warlords and plunged the country into civil war chaos. You need to understand Afghanistan elite are all scumbags, there are no good people. Who you think is the good guys doesn't mean they are the good guys. India backs anything that is anti Pakistan. Your logic is flawed.

Pakistan-Russia-China will fix this. Why don't you stick to your own part of the world and harass Bangladesh or Nepal and other similar uglies. Western Asia is not where you belong.

India's multi billion dollars arms purchases can't beat the superior strategic culture of the Pakistani deep state. We brought China, US, Russia, Iran and GCC on the same page on Afghanistan through applied strategy. Burn! :coffee:

yawn

.

Irony is that child raping is probably more prominent in Hindu India than Muslim countries.

Russia is for itself. Now even USA -trump is running around it in circles.. Much impressive. north alliance-taliban-mujahids-Pashtuns-nwfp all same stuff.I don't care. As for Russia , they have bigger concerns ,security of central asia.

US oil firms were negotiating oil pipeline with the Talibans (even Taliban leaders visited US for that) and that was going quite well until 9/11 happened. Talibans did decide to handover Osama but US gov just wanted to invade and setup camp. Aim of this war was to destabilise Pakistan through proxies that Americans and the Indians created and sponsored.

We know the reality so you can spew all the lies you want, India will exit Afghanistan one way or another.

What lies?.. you think Pakistan can entice UAE, Saudi, US, NATO or any other decent state by producing the taliban lollipop again and again? You seem to be indulging in conspiracy theories about Osama, but the world knows the truth.

It was Pakistan that took the taliban to the US in the first place, it's Pakistan's madrassas and training grounds that produced the taliban...now don't tell me the US and India forced you to do it.

One would have imagined that Pakistan would have learnt its lessons by now that you don't feed and promote snakes..but then, they seem to have found a new buyer for the taliban peace talks theory..and we know how it ends.

Standing up in support terrorists, butchers, medieval cave rats. The taliban are killing poor afghan folk on a daily basis, and you guys are advocating a future under taliban for the poor afghan because it's suits your narrative?.

I guess what the taliban did to Pakistan wasn't lesson enough.

India made its blunders ,I will admit that. But anyone who thinks that russia is making alliiance with pakistan is delusional. Friends of convenience for destroying ISIS.As long as saudi influence is strong,I don't expect russia to be more than a friend of convenience.

Afghanistan is inconsequential as long as it is not a base for 9/11 type attacks

Naah, we will sit back and enjoy the show..We know how Pakistani promoted and sponsored taliban peace story always ends. The climax will remain the same.

We will soon get another chance to say ." We told you so...again".

But ask Afghans and they will tell you who is the one not needed in Afghanistan...Pakistan should stop interfearing in Afghanistan.

There are over 10 million legal and illegal Afghans living in Pakistan. With many more wanting to come in. So by default, Afghanistan is our business. Not to mention the fact that we have been feeding, clothing and sustaining the Afghans for nearly 40 years.
