Yeah, that was pretty sad considering that air defense was modernized recently.

Hawk was a 60 year old air defense system having maximum range of 45 kms. So it is a medium range out dated SAM and does not reflect capabilities of turkish system. An air defense system is one component an overall defense network with multiple layers. Placing just few components do not work.

Nope, it was modernized with a new radar that should have been able to engage new threats.

There are lot of variables other than radar. If a standoff weapon was fired from a distance greater than range then it is pretty much useless. It is not designed to take bigger targets and not small stand off weapons. As a complete system it has to be supported by small anti air gun of CIWS to take on small stand off missiles.

As i said earlier air defense is a highly complicated task with layers of defences complimenting each others. If air defense system alone could have solved the problem then countries would have invested mostly in air defense systems only and not on much expensive fighter aircrafts
