Rs 5 a meal for poor in five Orissa towns

By: Express News Service | Bhubaneswar | March 3, 2015 2:21 am

Following the line of Tamil Nadu’s Amma’s Canteen, started by former chief minister Jayalalithaa, where idli is served at Rs 1 a piece, Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik will soon introduce ‘Aahar’ scheme from this April, through which poor people coming to cities can avail lunch at Rs 5.

Under the scheme, the government would provide a meal for Rs 5 to the urban poor in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Sambalpur, Berhampur and Rourkela. The menu would comprise plain rice and dalma (a combination of dal and vegetables), payas and a few other food items that form part of staple Oriya lunch. Everyday, 25,000 people would be fed through such centres.

Corporate houses would provide assistance for the scheme while the state’s food supply and consumer welfare department and the urban development department would set up the necessary infrastructure.

Government sources said as poor people visiting different cities and towns for various works face difficulties in getting food due to high price, the ‘Aahar’ centres at bus stands, railway stations, hospitals and other crowded places would come to their rescue.

“People can avail the lunch at subsidised price. NGOs having experience in handling food related schemes will be assigned the job of distributing food to the poor in urban areas,” said Food and Supplies Minister Sanjay Dasburma.

Health inspectors of different municipal corporations would check quality of food being provided at the proposed ‘Aahar’ centres and different corporate houses would support the cheap food schemes in urban pockets, he said.

The cheap food scheme would be extended to other towns subsequently after reviewing the functioning of the ‘Aahar’ centres in the five cities.

Highly commendable.

I guess some amt of freebies is necessary

. . .
That is always depends on peoples attitude.Kerala was one of pooreststate in this nation when we got the independence. But following commie govt ensure free food and health for needy people.I think it was so successful in our case.People travelled around the world for jobs .And a lot of money flowed n to our state. We have no industry yet we have high HDI in India. Not a great model. But still somewhat better than other approach.

cut the crap, i am a mallu. Kerala is the most economically blessed state in the country with surplus fresh water, extremely fertile soil and the second longest coastline. with all that it has accomplished 'motta thala'.

go try telling a mother in rajasthan or gujarat that kerala was the poorest blablabla ..., when they have to walk 5 km everyday to get a pot of drinking water.

mallu sense of entitlement exceeds everybody else's. in 70 years of independence kerala has been the biggest underachieving state. and please do not parade the nonsense hdi numbers. like i said, if you drop a seed in kerala by mistake, in 12 months you will be eating fruit. thats how blessed our state is.

I cant agree with you.Fertile soil is not factor in Kerala.Perhaps you also know that.Except those rubber plantations .Systematic agriculture is vanished from our state a long time ago.Gujarat or TN has their own industrial base.So they can move forward in long term. But for Keralites Gulf money is the lifeline.o.

so fertile soil resulted in the ruin of systematic agriculture while gujarat and tn just sat and watched industrial base grow by itself? living in denial is a common trait of many mallus and pakistanis.

we dont have an industrial base because of what?
1) poor education? oh no, we have the highest per capita grads!!!
2) lack of resources? oh no, we have a massive coastline to land anything we need
3) because we like to procrastinate and are just fcukin lazy? oh no, but.... oh yes

do you know how long we have been procrastinating on the vizhinjam port? if you dont, let me tell you - 60 years. now that hambantota has come up, vizhinjam will never materialize as it will become commercially unviable. do you know what 'noku kooli' means? do you know the state with the highest deficit ratio?

please padare, spare us all the embarrassment.

Come to Odisha and see yourself. We are not getting any workers to work in our fields or shops. If someone is there they are asking for heavy charges. Those who were working now sitting in their homes and eating 1 Rs rice.

Govt is not creating jobs in the state. People going to states like Delhi, Maharashtra, Tamilnadu, Karnataka and others to abroad for work. It's like a taboo now if someone wants to work in odisha.

Is it going to help anyway ? Would those poors going to get jobs?

Well that is strange. In here overflow to Gulf caused shortage of laboures in Kerala and good for NI labours including from Orissa. If you want to see hard work you should visit Tamil.Nadu.

Peoples attitude is indeed a problem.

What the hell are you talking about ?
Did I say about our hard work ?
About industrial.base.Around 3.3 crore people in Kerala .Land scarcity is in the highest level.Except in Palakkad we dont have any land for large scale investment. Can you say about that in the case of TN or Gujarat ?I dont think so.
I am telling one thing and you keep saying some other thing.
Vizhinjam port is delayed because of the contribution of tourism muthalalis.
