Cox’s Bazar International University has suspended a girl student following media reports that she got admitted to the institution using fake identity and that belongs to the Rohingya community. Rohingyas, not being Bangladeshi citizens, are not allowed to enroll into formal educational institutions in the country.

Dr Abul Kashem, Vice Chancellor of the university, said the authorities have decided to suspend LLB(Hons) student Rahima Akhter alias Rahi Khushi following media reports identifying her as a Rohingya girl.

A three-member probe committee was formed on Saturday asking it to submit a report within seven days, the VC added.


Deutsche Welle (DW), a German international broadcaster, released a 1.32-minute video, showing Rahima taking interviews of Rohingya people and collecting data at a camp in Cox’s Bazar as an NGO worker.

According to the video released by DW, Rahima fled Myanmar to Bangladesh with her family in 1992 and was admitted to Baitush Sharaf Jobbaria Academy at Boilapara in Cox’s Bazar hiding her real identity as formal education of Rohingyas in Bangladeshi institutions is restricted. Mujibur Rahman, Trustee of the Cox’s Bazar International University, said Rahima passed SSC from Baitush Sharif Jabbaria Academy and HSC from Cox’s Bazar Government Women’s College.

Rahima was admitted to the university after receiving SSC and HSC certificates and national ID. The probe body report will be submitted to University Grants Commission (UGC) to take the final decision in this regard, Mujibur added.

Ibrahim Khalil, president of Prothom Alo Bondhushava, Cox’s Bazar district committee, said Rahima was the finance secretary of the committee and was suspended from the post on September 5 and later expelled as she failed to prove her Bangladesh nationality.

Most Afghani refugees in the western world come to these countries with Pakistani passports and the ones that didn't have the means to do so we're allowed to work and earn for their families within Pakistan.

Infact, I had a friend in high school whos father was part of the Kufar afghani communist party's army. After he was defeated and humiliated by the Taliban, this fucker came to Pakistan and stayed for 5 years. He earned enough money and got a Pakistani passport and came to new york. 2 out 5 of his children and his wife are Pakistani citizens until they got to the united states.. To this day he curses Pakistan. This is the reality of the "afghan refugee".

Many Rohingyas are doing it as well illegally. But in Pakistan are those officially allowed? Just for information Rohingyas are not recognized as refugee yet.

I had one question? The rohingya claimed that they are descendants of Arab Muslims who settled in Arakan in the 13th century and they are not bengalis. If that is the case then why are there Hindus amongst the rohingyas? Hinduism never existed amongst the Arabs and these rohingya Hindus resembles Bengali hindus in every sense.

She falsified documents because the BD authority does not allow her to study. So, it is the govt fault. She did not steal any one's school certificate and impersonated her. She is a qualified girl who should be allowed to pursue higher study in the present identity.

All the Rohingya children must get an education as per the laws of the land they are living in. The UN organizations should take the matter in their hand and arrange for her and other destitute Rohingyas to get a proper education.

She should be re-admitted to the College and helped with a stipend to pursue higher education of her choice.
