RMG Makes a Small Inroad into Indian Market

Your statement does not make any sense... please rephrase. I said that most of the international brands in the mass market have a local Indian company as its partner or as its distributor.

This is what you said before:
The BD companies have to get a majority Indian shareholder if they really want to tap the Indian market, otherwise it will be a hard sell.

To do business no company has to give indians any share let alone majority stake. Get your head straight. During Chinese PM visit india asked to open market for indian pharmaceuticals products. Did india offer China majority share of indian pharmaceuticals companies??

Problem is with 15-18% tariff barrier india put on Bangladeshi garments. If you have something to say then talk about indian tariff barrier. Stupid arguments will derail the thread only.

.
So does that mean housary industry of Ludhiana is going to shut down soon????

oh my god!!!!............36000 units are in ludhiana................punjab is going to get on road.

well People who says that exports from Bangladesh will hit whole Indian economy might have to rethink.....................Garment industries are in few pockets in India.....................as in north-west its Ludhiana.............

India is not singling out Bangladesh on import duties................DR.MMS adopted globalisation in 91 with some restrictions to protect local industries.
In past , India has even slammed anti-dumping duties of many other countries.
We are a poor country.............we need to protect what we have.

I stand by my statement that to be successful in the consumer mass market of India you need an Indian partner or distributor. I have read many market research reports for global brands in India and my statement holds true.

Regards the tarriff barrier, it is the same for the rest of the international brands as well, why should BD be given a favor over the rest. If you need favor from India, you have to also give preferential terms in building transit route for India through BD. It is mutual as always.

The problem is that you are trying to compete in the same field where Indian manufacturers are also strong and no country would want to affect its own industry at the cost of outside companies flooding its markets. The reason why Chinese products are successful in India is that India is traditionally weak in electronics and mechanical parts/hardware manufacturing, so if you ask for market access in some products that are not mainstay for Indian companies, you are guaranteed to have an easier inroad into the Indian market.

.
^^^^ More stupid arguments.....no one asked for favor. India should clean up its act and remove artificial barrier it imposes.

.
^^^ Stop personal attacks and give some valid arguments. Just wishing for preferential access is not going to help your case.

Issues in importing Sri lankan goods to India under the FTABy Somi Hazari

The spirit and purpose of the FTA was to allow preferential access to each others markets.

Unfortunately, when the FTA was signed in 1998 and when the list was released in 2000 the criteria was laid down, but not the procedures. Perhaps it was envisaged there would be no ambiguity.

Whilst Indian goods have "flooded and swamped" the Sri Lankan market the access given to Sri Lankan goods is limited and there is no end to the long list of Non-Tariff Barriers that confront these goods.

Most Indians are not aware of the fact that the standard of living in Sri Lanka is significantly higher than in India.

As Sri Lanka opened its economy in 1977, many years before India the Sri Lankan market has the major "brands of the world". Some of the facilities in Sri Lanka are far superior than the ones in India.

India's non-tariff trade barriers seen hurting Pakistani exports
By Khalid Mustafa

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan, which enjoys most favoured nation (MFN) status by India, remains unable to get its benefit because of the non-tariff barriers, which effectively block an increase in exports to its eastern neighbour, a senior official said.

Pakistan remains unable to get the advantage of MFN status given by India, Commerce Secretary Zafar Mehmood told The News. The non-tariff barriers effectively prevent a growth in Pakistani exports, he said.

U.S. flags concern over India trade barriers

NEW DELHI | Tue Nov 9, 2010 6:07am EST

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Commerce Secretary Gary Locke on Tuesday flagged U.S. concerns that India's complex system of import tariffs, "opaque" foreign investment rules and non-tariff barriers were slowing bilateral trade and investment.

....................

Speaking at a business function at the end of Obama's visit, Locke talked up bilateral trade opportunities for India and the United States in sectors like energy, infrastructure and medical equipment.

"Even as tariffs come down in some items, non-tariff barriers have proliferated," Locke said.

Now that’s no coincidence that all these countries feel the same way as Bangladesh over indian trade barriers. I waiting to see Indians argue US was looking for concession from india.

Thanks for the links trying to prove India is a difficult place to do business. Who said doing business is a cake walk. If you think it is then you are free to take your superior products elsewhere.

See as I mentioned before my main argument in this case (for garments sector) is that we also have a thriving garments sector and it is in our interest to save it. Of course the govt is allowing you access to the Indian market and if the consumers truly see the quality in BD products, they would be more than willing to pay for it.

You are welcome. It’s good to see Indians get to know outside prospective of their country that neither indian media nor education or any other systems talks about. defence.pk should be thanked for that.
