RFP to Honeywell for Jaguar re-engine this month

The MoD is expected to send out an RFP to Honeywell this month for the F125 IN turbofan engine for the IAF’s Jaguar fleet, IAF Chief N.A.K. Browne has revealed. The F125 IN engine emerged last year as the only suitable powerplant to re-engine the Jaguar and replace its Rolls-Royce Adour Mk811 turbofans.

In February last year, Rolls-Royce pulled out of a two-way competition after the IAF insisted that the competition was to replace the Jaguar’s engines and not merely upgrade them. Rolls-Royce had offered (and indeed, continues to offer) a comprehensive ‘low-risk optimised’ upgrade involving the Adour Mk821 engine. Sources indicate that the Honeywell engine had an edge from the start, considering it was lighter and had proven to require less modifications for integration. Last year, it had been conjectured that the competition would be refloated. However, after a study found that no engines in the global market would suit the Jaguar other than the two that competed, the IAF recommended that it go with the Honeywell offering, as a direct purchase.

The F125 after-burning version powers the Taiwan Indigenous Defense Fighter and the non-afterburning version, the F124, powers the Czech fighter and the M346. “As an ‘off-the-shelf’ engine solution, the F125IN is designed to drop-fit into existing Jaguar airframes, resulting in an enhanced aircraft with superior mission capabilities, improved pilot safety, and outstanding reliability, with a projected life-cycle savings of over Rs. 7,000 crore ($1.5 billion). F125IN will transform the IAF Jaguar and power India into the future,” says Honeywell.

One of the delayed but top priority project for IAF. Engine change and radar in DARIN-III upgrade will make this a really formidable plane.

Will IAF going to look towards older Jaguars as spares if OMAN which is looking towards replacing them with EF-2000 Trench 2 or may 30 J-10BS and some more from France and UK????

Old crap. It seems like I am hearing about this for decades. Those MoD babus are so lazy and impotent.

I first heard about MRCA when I was in high school and now I am a IT professional with years of experience still IAF is years away from getting thier first MRCA!!! Same goes to Mirage upgrade deal and Jaguar's new engine.

Navy's Gorshkov is the funniest of all, now even they started making historical comics about Vikramaditya.

Oman is a very rich country. Why on freaking earth would it want J-10 that even poor country
like Myanmar rejected in favour of MiG-29 from Russia ?

Not really, we have licence produced them and have too much of them anyway. It would be easier to store have of the older Jags instead of upgrading them, while only the latest (licence produced till 2008) get more capabilities.
No matter what, any big upgrade of these fighters are useless, since it won't be used in any frontline service anymore with the arrival of so many multi role fighters in IAF.

These upgrades aren't going to happen anytime soon. IAF should have sell these JAGs and with the upgrade cost should have bought more Rafale offself. Or even the increased order of LCA MK-2

Oman? The last time they showed some interest it was between EFT and Gripens. J10s? Is it being offered for export in open market to any client? From reports I thought only you were offered so far.

Would love it if that happens. Its a good aircraft.

How? Jaguars have outlived their lives.

Rather than wasting tax payers money which GOI is famous for, how about increasing the Rafale orders? Or even Tejas Mk2 orders? At least we will have brand new jets that can perform multiple tasks in a go.

How far jaguars are good in Air to Air roles....?

JAG sepecats are not a2a dogfighters, For the lack of better words, they are bomb trucks, extremely reliable ones. With DARIN upgrades, better avionics, MFD's and targetting systems will be installed. Please do remember, these are ground attack, aircrafts with very good loitering time, these will be go to guys for Air interdiction missions for any movement of the IBG is CSdoctrine.

I am sure EF-2000 will going to be in their fleet so Jaguars will be on for sale as spares. I wish that Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Oman and may be UAE will look in to developing a 5th Generation Aircraft with EU or Turkey so that they will have their own aircraft.
