Photos uploaded to a Chinese website indicate that the PLA Navy Air Force has successfully equipped its Su-30MK2 fighter with the domestic SD-10A air-to-air missile, according to Duowei News, an outlet operated by overseas Chinese, on Oct. 6.

Earlier photos have shown the PLA is able to install its KG600 electronic countermeasure pod on the Su-30MKK of the PLA Air Force as well as the Su-30MK2 fighter of the PLA Navy. A Chinese military expert told Tencent News that it is a technological breakthrough for China to be able to fit domestically designed devices and weapons systems to Russian aircraft such as the Su-27 as well as the Su-30, which were designed to be equipped with Russian systems only.

The Shenyang Aircraft Corporation played a key role in this breakthrough as it was responsible for producing the J-11 fighter from the design of the Su-27. With this experience, the company's engineers managed to crack the Su-27's software and then modify it. The Su-27 became the first Russian-built fighter able to fire the PL-8 short-range air-to-air missile developed in China.

By fitting the Chinese-built SD-10A to the Su-30MK2 fighter, Shenyang Aircraft Corporation gained the experience it needed to further customize the Russian fighter. It can now equip the aircraft with domestic electronic countermeasure pods, electro-optical targeting systems and precision attack munitions even though the company has not received authorization from Russia to conduct such modifications. When China completes the development of the J-16 fighter, more modifications may be added to the Su-30MKK and Su-30MK2.

The expert said the J-16 is based on the Su-30. If the Shenyang Aircraft Corporation is able to change the fire control system of the Su-27 through its experience of reverse engineering, it can do the same with the Su-30. By that time, the Su-30MKK and Su-30MK2 fighters may carry more advanced Chinese weapon systems such as the PL-15 medium-range air-to-air-missile, PL-10 infrared-guided air-to-air missile and satellite guided munitions, the report said.

This is not reserve engineering. China have take license and not showing it off officially of the SU series.

The J-16 is not based off the Su-30MK2 but rather the J-11BS (which is already comprised of Chinese subsystems albeit in a Russian airframe).

Simply the old russian radar are throw away and replaced by domestic radar. 100% compatible with Chinese data link and domestic weapon.

they are talking about the MK2, those still have the full russian electronics on board, if they are fitted with chinese weapons, it means china has cracked the source code. not that it's THAT important, given superior chinese electronics in newer flanker models being built in china, everything from j-11b to
j-15 to j-16.

..seeing quite a lot chinees people, me myself (me somwhat neighboring them for time) think: 'strange nation' (no to go futher) :what:

Reverse engineering = theft of knowledge = Patents disregard = learning & building by deceptive means.

Reverse engineering = theft of knowledge = Patents disregard = learning & building by deceptive means.

So the next time when spies from your country get access to some critical technology, please tell them to take a hike and instead try to buy the rights to use the patents from your enemy. How stupid can people get. This mindset is an unintended consequence of the outsourcing business, where impressionable minds end up being controlled by large Corporates.

Reverse engineering is lawful when product legitimately obtained. But the conventional wisdom now a days implies differently, looking at some dubious & tainted countries infamous for such hitjob type.

When it comes to military and war, there is no right or wrong. All that matters is if you are weak or you are strong.

War isn't only fought on the battlefield these days but, increasingly, it's also over the cyber domain. If China has stolen all this technology, as most of the crybabies insist, then China's cyber and intelligence capabilities were better than those countries, they allegedly stole from. However, I think the IP stealing has been overblown and a lot of subsystems have been developed by hard work and innovation of Chinese engineers and scientists, but of course, Westerners and their lapdogs would never give China that much credit. Not that China gives a damn either way.
