Revealed PAF Had Evaluated The Gripen

Watching the footage of the latest interview of AVM Shahid Latif , I couldn't help noticing one of his pictures displayed prominently in his library. Being a former director of the JF-17 project, i thought he must be standing in front of a JF-17 Bravo, but since he appeared young in that image so a little scrutiny revealed that he was actually posing in front of a dual seat Saab JAS 39 Gripen .
Although rumours had been circulating that after America had placed Pakistan under sanctions and embargoed the delivery of further F-16s, the PAF went about hunting for another Western fighter aircraft including the EF Typhoon, Dassault Rafale and Mirage-2000 and Saab Gripen. Although images of all the latter with PAF pilots have appeared on various sites but none with Gripen. It's also interesting to note that one of the PAF F-16 pioneer was sent to evaluate the Swedish aircraft.

I remeber cabinet approving a possible deal after in 2005 bush saying no..
But then all of sudden he said yes..why because they didnt want the deal tl go through

I believe the PAF dropped the idea since the Gripen contains American parts and can technically come under US sanctions.

I know it wouldn't serve any purpose to explore this topic, but just out of curiosity, could we have asked saab for a non Americanized version of gripen, or that would have pushed it beyond our budget?

The best thing that PAF done was to make the JF17 Thunder.

It was dropped(rightly so) after usa cleared 55 f16s with all ammunition

However the earth quake greatly trimmed that order..

Engine is key US item, although today if any deal went through PAF can get all EU tech bases fighter.

Let’s one thing clear why commercial enterprise will give you a joy ride as it’s also PR for them a true eval is multi sortie covering various aspect at different levels

Anyway the cockpit was influenced by jas-39 and not f-16 since picked up later ans at smaller scale 4x4 had vs jas39 8x5 hdd like current Jf-17

Plus jas-39 was eval multiple times but never materialized for various reasons, so was mirage 2k , tornado [emoji946] know per paf history book [emoji425]

IIRC the PAF had listed the Gripen as a 'Plus One' option (in addition to the JF-17 and F-16C/D). I don't know why (since it's in a similar size range as the JF-17), but it was there alongside the Rafale, Typhoon and FC-20 (J-10A).

I believe this evaluation happened during his senior years. As PAF were checking out this aircraft since the 1990s. Shahid Sikandar and Kaiser Tufail were originally selected to evaluate the aircraft but back then it was in its early development stages. Some PAF test pilot candidates did their TPS courses and it involved them flying the Gripen as part of the curriculum.
