NEW DELHI (BNS): A hypersonic variant of BRAHMOS cruise missile system should be developed that can be reused, former President of India, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam suggested on Sunday.

Addressing an event to mark 10 glorious years of first supersonic launch of the BRAHMOS cruise missile, Dr. Kalam said, “BRAHMOS will graduate to hypersonic cruise missile… it should be a reusable hypersonic cruise missile, meaning that it would return to its base after delivering the payload.”

Plans are going on to develop the advanced version of the weapon system that can travel at a speed of Mach 5 to 7. The new missile, to be called BRAHMOS II, will be smaller than the original BRAHMOS.

Speaking on the occasion, A Sivathanu Pillai, CEO & MD of BrahMos Aerospace - the JV company between India and Russia - described BRAHMOS as “an unparalleled system.”

“Its speed, precision and devastating power in destroying the target made the weapon unparalleled. Its competitor is yet to born,” he said.

India and Russia set up the JV through an Inter-Governmental Agreement signed on February 12, 1998 to jointly design, develop, produce and market the BRAHMOS missile system.

On the joint partnership, Dr. Pillai said, “The JV has become a symbol of Indo-Russian friendship and also changed the minds of the developed countries in the dynamics of war itself.”

Governor of Chhattisgarh and former Defence Secretary of India, Shekhar Dutt, who was also present during the event, said that BRAHMOS today has carved a niche for itself after a decade of journey.

“The formation of the company set an example of integration of jointly developed high technology military products and its promotion in the world defence market. Both the product and the JV company have established a unique status in the world with a brand,” he said.

The BRAHMOS programme achieved its first milestone when the supersonic cruise missile system was successfully test-fired for the first time from Chadipur, Orissa on June 12, 2001.

The missile has already been inducted in the Indian Army and Navy while the air-launched version it set to be test-flown next year.

No sure why Dr. APJ is so keen on reusable systems and that too in missiles. It is a great idea but do we have the time to invest in making it reusable or do we catch up in so many areas we are already behind.

we can be 100% sure with what Dr.APJ says... He is a genius...

He wont make statements like others for publicity, definitely that man sees a possibility to create such a missile system that's why he stated.

I think it might be like UCAV.

MIRV missile technology has the ability to hit places at different locations, that is possible why this technology can't be?

I find myself confusing here, a crusie misile is to inflict maximum damage by is kinetic energy then only it uses its payload to complete annialation. I don't think there is a possibility of such technolgy to succeed. What APJ must have had in mind is to agument the existing system with a second stage and increase its range and one of the stage to be retrieved for reuse.

Why is it a great idea? It's the stupidest idea for a cruise missile.

Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam tried to be funny but he's two months late, April 1 has long passed. Or he tried to jump into the green bandwagon to recycle cruise missile. You know, trying to be eco-friendly. And you believe him?!

he probably suggesting something like this ,

I think he is suggesting a hypersonic variant of bramhos which will be a totally different missile & can cruise at hypersonic speed, deliver the payload & return to base at hypersonic speed.

this is a revolutionary thought but not impossible.:)

Even if the missile is recovered by means of a controlled crash in desert or sea, it needs to be sent to workshop for refitting and rearming. By the time it reaches the battlefront again , the war may be long over. So with all respect to Dr. Kalam, this is idea of yours is unworkable.

Also such a recoverable Brahmos if ever built will be expensive than a normal one and the cost do not justify the cause (at least in this case)

There was a russian concept for a hypersonic drone..
If it is implemented.. it will be a very unique surveillance system with no parallel.
Although it would have zero loiter time as such, it would be suited to spot recce very well.
Providing instant BDA to a strike??
Or perhaps acting as a look ahead for a moving target such as a TELAR, transmitting target location to a strike package a minute or so behind...
If it is the Doc's own idea.. he is showing his intellect.

A jet-powered drone? If only we could think of such things.

When this kind of a tech(though not available) is shown in the Hollywood Movie TRANSFORMERS First Part, you guys clap and fart with your mouth but if some one tells that it is possible in reality you criticize. Grow up mate.
