With additional capacity coming online at Kizildere and Efeler, Turkey breaks into the list of countries with more than 1,000 MW of installed geothermal power generation capacity and now has a capacity of 1,005 MW.

With an addition of two geothermal power plants coming online, Turkey has broken into the list of countries with more than 1,000 MW of installed geothermal power generation capacity. The country has now an installed capacity of 1,005 MW.

The first plant is the Kizildere III geothermal power plant by Zorlu Enerji, which received a temporary acceptance by Turkey’s Ministry of Energy with 99.5 MW. When finished the plant will have a generation capacity of 165 MW being. The plant is located in the Karatas district of Denizli and Aydin provinces.

The second plant is Unit 6 of the Efeler geothermal power plant at Germencik in Aydin province. The plant added unit 6 with an installed capacity of 22.6 MW bringing the total capacity of the Efeler geothermal plants to 232.2 MW. The plant has been developed by Güris Holding.

Turkey's General Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration MTA has announced the discovery of four geothermal areas in the Thrace Region in Northwest Turkey.

Four new geothermal resources discovered by Turkey’s General Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration MTA in Thrace Region (NW Turkey); Kirklareli-Asilbeyli, Tekirdag-Saray, Kirklareli-Vize and Istanbul-Silivri.

The General Directorate of MTA completed the first geothermal research drilling in 2015 at the determined locations as a result of geological and geophysical surveys for the geothermal energy that was launched in 2013 in the region.

– The first drilling at the As?lbeyli district, which is located about 5 km from the center of K?rklareli, is at a depth of 1500 m and the hot fluid at 57 C temperature and 30 lt /sec flow rate with the compressor production. The well has also about 4 lt /sec of artesian production. With these values, the first geothermal field of Thrace region was revealed.

Later investigations were extended in the region and results of the same production values were obtained in the second drilling operation with a depth of 1500 m in Tekirda?-Saray district center.

In the year of 2016, the third research drilling was carried out in K?rklareli-Vize district with a depth of 2200 m. From this drilling, the compressor has obtained a geothermal fluid at a temperature of 43 ° C and a discharge rate of about 5 lt/sec.

Lastly, in Istanbul-Silivri, the result of drilling at 1500 m depth in 2017, the hot fluid at 60 C temperature and 10 lt/sec flow rate was obtained by compressor.

With these production values, it is expected that new economic developments will be experienced in different areas, from greenhaus heating to thermal tourism, which is very close to Europe and Istanbul.

The new discoveries discovered by the General Directorate of MTA and the geothermal potential and geothermal energy research have changed drastically in the region where the geothermal components and surface data are very few.

In 2018, studies will continue in the region and geothermal in Edirne province is targeted to be uncovered.

GAP is ancient, that project has been running since before AKP. I think the focus back then was drip irrigation to create more yield from farming and such. If they've been working on drip irrigation for a long time in order to make the soil more fertile, I can understand why some ppl are amazed at the lush green fields. Central anatolia of Turkey like Konya and surroundings have had some projects just to transport water from one end to another.

Let’s hope we hit the jackpot somewhere in the mainland or in the seas... I have read many times how huge is Turkey’s potential in natural gas and oil which is on 99% undeveloped.

Even if we cover our own needs with what we eventually find it will be a huge advantage for the whole country.

Well, that means around 40 billion USD stay inside every year instead of going abroad! That means no current deficit, cheaper energy and oil and thus more production and export, and maybe even foreign trade surplus! And these are only monetary advantages. Also it would strengthen our hand in international relations due to decreasing dependency.

That's a vital issue. We must focus on this more than anything in my opinion. It's a shame for us to buy natural gas from Russia to produce electric! According to this page (http://www.enerjiatlasi.com/elektrik-uretimi/) for 2017 %53 of our electric production is from imported sources! So we produce only %47 of our electricity needs, this must be %147 so we can use surplus to reduce our oil needs. Look at China, they madly invest on wind energy. USA tries to stop them to reach resources but they make game-changer moves.

We have to realize all our potential on wind and solar energy. Also we must use all of our coal potential. A country like USA produce %30 of its huge energy production from coal! But we think producing electric from coal is bad and harmful. This is another lie which they thought us in hayat bilgisi lessons in 80s, 90s! Fuvking colonised heads!

Wouldn't you volunteer to sit in closed confined space while Carbondioxid is pumped in, I'd like to test out your claim that it's a lie we've been told. I think perhaps you're right, but I'd like to be sure......

Don't you have something other than this ridiculous BS to bring forward?

Turkey 272,700 GWh

These are 2016 figures. USA generates 16x times more electric than us and share of coal is %30, while ours is 16 for domestic coal! Are we richer than americans? Do we have luxury to ignore coal?

Depends on coal. Brown or black coal. The second is most from under earth mines. Brown coal mines destroy the environmen. You have to recultivate the area later. But if you use modern filter systems you can minimize environmental pollution.

.
Still, coal is no matter how you look at it not renewable energy. However if we just want to produce electricity we can make use of the coal. Which is also what the US does. But it's rather funny how someone come in here with a zealots fanatism and starts throwing tantrums, it's like a bad Monty Python parody.
