ISLAMABAD: At a closed-door Senate session on Thursday, Interior Adviser Rehman Malik presented a bleak picture of the security situation in the country and showed what he called evidence of the involvement of India, Afghanistan and Russia in terrorist activities within the country.

It is the first time Pakistan has blamed these countries and cited evidences which, it is believed, will be shared with the international community, particularly the United States, which has expressed concern over growing militancy in the country.

Following a harsh statement by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, US special envoy Richard Holbrooke telephoned President Asif Ali Zardari on Thursday and conveyed a similar message.

During the Senate briefing, the adviser said that all major incidents of terrorism and suicide attacks were linked to India and Afghanistan, adding that terrorists were being trained by them in those countries and in North Waziristan and being sent to the settled areas.

Mr Malik said the government was pursuing a policy of ending the sufferings of the people of Balochistan and taking measures to bring them back to mainstream.

He told the house that some hostile agencies were involved in creating unrest in the province. The government, he said, had been working to address the grievances of the Baloch people.

He said all political prisoners in the province had been released and cases against Hyarbyar Marri had been withdrawn to create a congenial atmosphere. ‘All the 36 checkposts of FC have been removed and it has been directed to work under the provincial administration and in coordination with police,’ he said.

He said President Zardari had visited Quetta, assured the Baloch leadership that the problems would be solved and announced a development package of more than Rs46 billion for the province, particularly for health and education.

He said displaced persons would be rehabilitated. Mr Malik said the government was planning to prepare the NFC award taking backwardness of provinces into consideration.

After the briefing, some senators told Dawn that Mr Malik had shown some video clips and documentary evidences about involvement of India and Afghanistan in incidents of terrorism in Pakistan.

Conspiracies are being hatched to destabilise and isolate Pakistan. A militant organisation, the Balochistan Liberation Army, was formed which is being funded by Russia and backed by India. The organisation is headed by Brahamdagh Bugti who is stationed in the Afghan capital. About 1,000 students were trained in Russia and now they are back in Balochistan, a senator quoted Mr Malik as saying.

‘He first gave briefing on the Federally Administered Tribal Areas and Swat and then on the Balochistan situation,’ Senator Talha Mehmood said.

SWAT ACCORD

Talking to reporters outside the Parliament House, Mr Malik said the government would have no option but to take action against the Taliban if they violated the Swat peace deal and did not lay down their weapons as promised by chief of Tehrik-i-Nifaz-i-Shariati-i-Mohammadi Maulana Sufi Mohammad.

When it was pointed out that the Taliban had advanced to Buner and other districts of Malakand, the adviser said the situation was not serious because they had advanced only to some pockets in these areas and then returned to Swat.

If the Taliban continued such activities, the government would have no option but to take stern action against them, Mr Malik said.

Meanwhile, senators from Balochistan expressed dissatisfaction over the in-camera briefing. ‘It was an incomplete and ill-drafted briefing,’ said Hasil Bizenjo of the National Party. He agreed with the adviser that foreign hands were involved in sabotaging peace, but said: ‘If the government has evidence about the involvement of Afghan President Hamid Karzai in terrorism in Pakistan, then why has he not been questioned about it.’

Could it be Russia is taking revenge on Pakistan because we helped the U.S. break up the Soviet Union?

Do you think even if we show U.S. evidence they will help Pakistan?

What is another option for Pakistan to get the Russians, Indians, and Afghanis to stop this terrorism on Pakistan?

Can Moderators make this thread a sticky please.

Its good that Pakisthan is howing finger and talking of evidence at the same time. At an opportune time, the same (or whatever part of it) can be published in the media also with the aim of influencing the Indian Public Opinion. If the evidence is solid and credible, I am hopeful that Indian public opinion will change and this will influence the policies of GOI.

This is what also concerns most of the Pakistanis is that why isn't the issue being raised to the international level? Honestly there isn't much hope raising the issue with the Americans however we can raise the issue at the UN, we can take friendly countries into confidence and we can tell the Russians to back of other wise Chechnya isn't far away from our area of influence. For God sake this is the time GOP needs to stand up and take decisions which are necessary for the survival of Pakistan, just giving an in house briefings won't solve the matter.

Maybe because it is meant to be eaten up by the Pakistani people so that the government looks innocent and isn't blamed for epic fail after epic fail. This is Pakistani politics we are talking about.

Why would Pakistan government lie about having evidence?

When a U.S. government says anything, U.K. government says anything, even when Indian government says something without evidence everyone takes it so seriously, but when Pakistan government says something with evidence you think whatever

Because actions speak louder than words. Now run along little one.

What no Mossad involvement? So some experts were wrong after all.

Lol. Damn those naughty schoolchildren.

Because Rahman Malik says one thing in one moment and the very opposite in the next. That makes everything he say doubtful.

Unfortunately in this world that we live, in perceptions matter very much. Unfortunately Mr.Rehman Malik has a very negative image within Pakistan and outside for his flip flop statements.

If the evidence is there then it should be presented to the International community and brought to a logical conclusion.

True however let not hatred cloud our judgment. Most of us don't have a high regard for the GOP however that should not be our criteria to see if GOP is telling the truth or perhaps lying to cover up its own ills.

Baloch, Fata Senators boycott Senate in-camera session

ISLAMABAD: Many Senators from Balochistan and FATA boycotted the proceedings of the in-camera session of the house on Thursday held to review the security situation of Balochistan, reported ARY OneWorld.

The officials of Federal Interior Ministry, Intelligence Bureau and Frontier Constabulary briefed the upper house of the Parliament on alleged foreign involvement in fueling turmoil and insurgency in Balochistan.

The Senate was briefed in detail on the growing militancy in Balochistan while the documented evidences of dozens of sanctuaries of separatist militants in the province were also laid before the house.

The security officials also presented the record of satellite communication of separatist elements with other countries to the Senators and apprised them of the phone-call details by the abductors of UN official John Solecki that they made from Mastung to Kabul.

Many Senators from Balochistan and Fata expressed their concerns and dissatisfaction with the briefings and boycotted the session that was presided over by the Chairman Farooq H Naek, said the channel.

Why would they boycott this session, gives me a feeling as if they already have made up their minds and they don't want to listen what the other side has to say. The creditability of the GOP has gone down the toilet drain thanks to people like Rahman Malik no one wants to believe them.:tsk:

Well the officials of Federal Interior Ministry, Intelligence Bureau and Frontier Constabulary were all providing evidence not just Rehman Malik and I'm glad they're going to bring this up to the international community's attention.
