We are planning to have at least 8-10 Amphibious Assault Ships.

The plan is to purchase 3-4 of the WASP class and eventually design our own afterwards.

The JMSDF and the USN have talked about the up and coming America-Class Amphibious Assault Ship. So , we can chose to purchase those new ones as well.

Basically, the United States is very helpful in our navy's needs. :-)

@DESERT FIGHTER , this is the America-Class Amphibious Assault Ship:

Inshallah, we can do just that , bro. We desperately need the Ospreys , first, then we can reverse engineer these babies. And Improve on the already impressive American technology.

JMSDF has been expressing interests on these already for almost 10 years. Previous Cabinets were ...antagonistic towards our military's growth. Thanks God that Abe had removed these limitation(s) and barriers.

@gambit can these V-22s be used as AWACS & MPA if yes then they can be game changer for many nations, because countries like Pakistan may be able to afford medium size helicopter carrier with V-22 and possibly F-35Bs to project power at sea in future.
Absolutely. The Osprey was designed to be modular. If the intent is to extend air surveillance range beyond the current self defense capability, think of an AWACS Osprey with its ability to land at practically any futbol size field that can be cleared by army troopers overnight anywhere.

Wow...Look at that piece of 'junk' flying and doing all sorts of things the PLAAF and the Russian Air Force dreams of doing...

It's much harder for PLAN to confront Japanese Navy

Osprey V22 in Action

@gambit , @Peter C , @F-22Raptor , check out the Osprey in refueling operations....!

Yep, this is something a helicopter can't do easily. Will be very useful on carriers and amphibious assault ships.

Just think about search and rescue. A pilot bails out 400 miles from your carrier. What can you do to get him? Out of range of your helicopters. All you can do is airdrop him stuff until you get into helicopter range. That's sucks. But with the MV22 you can go get him.

I'm sure some jet powered version is in the future (using some V22/F35B tech combo) so when somebody is in the water 2000 miles out they can still get him. Say that Malaysian plane ditched 1000 miles out in the middle of the Indian Ocean...how can they be rescued with today's tech? Not easily. Only can airdrop rescuers and their equipment.

Also imagine a drone version with V22 tech refueling other drones.

How people underestimate V22/F35B tech and failing to grasp the future potential is amazing.
When people wanted to cancel the V22 it took a lot of brave people to stand up and call them short sighted.

Also for being a "big bulky helicopter" it's pretty fast.

700 American Helicopters Shot Down By Viet-Cong In 1 Week
VIETNAM (February, 1971) In one of the biggest American military failures ever, more than 700 helicopters were shot down by the North Vietnamese as the U.S. and their ARVN allies tried to close down the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Laos by attacking it.

Total helicopters destroyed in the Vietnam War was 5,086 out of 11,827
Based on a database from the Pentagon, we estimate that over 40,000 helicopter pilots served in the Vietnam War.

Um no...that was "700 helicopters damaged/shot down". Big difference, Point to your source that says all 700 were "shot down". I'm sure in some of those missions every helicopter got at least one bullet hole.

Like how many helicopters do you think the US had deployed over there at any one time? (Not the total over the years). 700 down would have probably been a huge percentage of the fleet and stopped things cold.
