ZHUKOVSKY (Moscow region), August 15. /ITAR-TASS/. India plans to buy three airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircrafts A-50 in Russia, a source in Russian governmental military and industrial commission told ITAR-TASS on Friday. In 2003 India has already ordered three such warplanes and the contract was fulfilled in 2010. “India is mulling possible delivery of another three AEW&C aircrafts, talks are on now,” the commission’s source said. He did not specify a timeline planned for a deal to strike. The delivery of AEW&C aircrafts is planned “in the same configuration” as under the agreement in 2003, he said. Meanwhile, the source added that after the A-50 delivery a contract for their maintenance was signed with India, “warplanes pass it successfully with assistance of Russian specialists.” A-50 built on the base of a military transport airplane Ilyushin Il-76MD was brought into service in 1989. AEW&C aircrafts A-50 are used to detect and track air targets and surface vessels, warn automated systems of command posts and to control airplanes in sighting.

Discussion has been going on same from last few years. Nothing coming in next 2yrs atleast.

Russian source, so lets keep than with caution, Indian officials only talked about 2 more. Anyway, we have to get them as fast as possible!

These awacs will be better than previous. Thats why IAF waited too long so that they can study more about their feasibility. But indeed, Indian sources are calm till today on this matter. Let us see what happen in future.

So far what I know is that 2 IL78 awacs by 2017 not in overall numbers.

Do you have some knowledge about this matter ?
Since the platform is same the only way these AWACS can be better than the earlier ones is due to the radar.
I have a few questions...

Which radar are we integrating with it - Green Pine or its desi derivative Swordfish ?

Does this mean our indigenous Swordfish radar is ready and is more advanced than the Green Pine ?
(It better be since we took the Green pine and worked on it for 12 years and counting)

And if we are buying from Israel then will it be the Super Green Pine that South Korea bought in 2012
or the plain old Green Pine which we inducted in 2002 ?
Or an even more advanced version of Super Green Pine ?

No, There is no specific sources about system. Even confirmation from MoD will have to come. I am just stating the facts because earlier systems was 10 years older. Avionics has changed too much from than.

3 A-50s currently in service with IAF were built by Tashkent aviation plant in Uzbekistan. IAF faced delays in delivery of aircrafts & spare parts because factory was not in good condition & losing its skilled personnel and production capacities. In 2010, the enterprise filed bankruptcy proceedings, and in June 2012 it ceased production of airplanes.
Later Russians shifted assembly line to its own territory at the Aviastar plant in Ulyanovsk. Hope Russians will deliver aircrafts on schedule with good after sales service this time.

this are not phalcons, in phalcons platform is Russian but radar is Israel. Are this new are completely Russian made . Correct me if I am wrong

A50 is the Russian platform / aircraft, the radar system including the dome comes from Israel and is called the Phalcon system. We will follow the same procedure again, Russians will build the platform, send it to Israel, they integrate the radar and will send the completed aircraft to India. But I do think there will be upgrades in the systems and avionics now. One cause of delay was also, that the Israelis had difficulties to integrate their systems into the Russian platform. Lets see hope that everything goes faster this time and that DRDO gets their AWACS ready soon too.

I think A-50 is a good choice for AEW&C platform for Indian Air Force because :

1. IAF already has 3 A-50s in service so there is no need to spend extra money for training of Pilots & ground crew. IAF already has a new avionics lab constructed in 2008 for logistical support & maintenance of A-50. Agra air base also houses an old avionics laboratory at the station, which handles avionics systems of the existing IL-76 and IL-78 MKI aircraft. Engineers of IAF are well experienced in maintenance of IL-76 variants.
2. Pilots of IAF are also skilled in flying IL-76 variants, any other aircraft means new training courses for pilots & more expenses. Transport Aircraft Operations Tactics Development Cell (TAOTDC), the top gun school of transport aircraft at Agra is already helping the crews of A-50s to improve their skills.
3. New A-50s will be based on IL-476 models with better characteristics.

I think you have confused Phalcon with Green pine.
