RAYTHEON GETS $287 MILLION FOR CLOSE-IN WEAPONS SYSTEM

WASHINGTON -- Raytheon has been awarded a $287 million U.S. Navy contract modification for work on the MK 15 Close-In Weapon System, or CIWS.
Exercising options on the previously awarded contract, the deal involves system upgrades, conversions, overhauls and associated hardware.
CIWS is a fast-reaction terminal defense against low- and high-flying, high-speed maneuvering anti-ship missile threats that have penetrated all other defenses.
It is also an integral element of the Fleet Defense In-Depth concept and the Ship Self-Defense Program.
Operating either autonomously or integrated in a combat system, the automatic terminal defense weapon system detects, tracks, engages and destroys anti-ship missiles.
CIWS comes in two variants. Phalanx utilizes a six-barrel Gatling gun, while SeaRAM replaces the gun with an 11-round Rolling Airframe Missile guide.
Phalanx is currently used on Navy and Coast Guard ships and is also utilized by foreign navies.
This contract combines Navy purchases with those of the governments of Turkey and Australia under the foreign military sales program.
Work will be performed in Kentucky, Vermont, Florida, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New York, Arizona, Virginia, the United Kingdom, Michigan and other locations.
It is expected to be completed by December 2022.
