It was an international conspiracy to gain control over Bangladesh's natural gas that led to the Awami League's defeat in the 2001 national polls, says Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The Awami League chief's remarks came on Saturday while speaking at the National Convention of the party youth front for women, the Juba Mahila League.

The BNP assumed power after the Eighth Parliamentary Election after getting 41.40 percent of votes that helped it win 193 parliamentary seats. Its ally the Jamaat-e-Islami clinched 17 seats with 4.28 percent votes.

The Awami League, which got 40.02 percent votes, had to leave office with only 62 seats in Parliament.

"I wanted to use the country's resources for the people first...Wanted to keep a 50-year reserve, then to consider whether to sell or not.

"What happened? ... The RAW representative, he had been doing rounds at the Hawa Bhaban (Khaleda Zia's political office then). It was the same case for the American embassy's representative," said Hasina.

She claimed that the Awami League was defeated as an outcome of a conspiracy hatched by the countries to take control of the natural gas reserves.
Hasina had said on several occasions after that election that a conspiracy was in the works against her as she had not agreed to sell gas to foreign companies while being in power between 1996 and 2001.

But it's the first time she levelled allegations against India's top intelligence agency the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) and the US embassy in Bangladesh and blamed them for her party's defeat.

But many Awami League leaders in private have raised those allegations against the then RAW station chief for being too close to Khaleda Zia's son and for influencing India's decision to back the BNP.

After the BNP won the polls, the then Indian National Security Adviser Brajesh Mishra rushed to Dhaka to congratulate Khaleda and told journalists that India "would not put all its eggs in one basket."

Leaders of the BNP, which now has no representation in the House after boycotting the 2014 polls, have called the government to make public the deals to be signed during the prime minister's upcoming India visit.

Referring to that, Hasina said, "Now we hear so much anti-India statements. I ask today, who promised before the 2001 polls to sell gas to India which the American companies wanted? It was Khaleda Zia... she did that to come in power. Not me.

"And now they come up with anti-India statements."

Hasina said that it was the BNP who agitated against the Farakka Barrage time and again. "You (Khaleda) even organised a long march to Farakka ... And forgot to raise the Ganges water issue during your India visit!"

During her India visit as the prime minister after the 1991 election, Khaleda Zia did not discuss the issue.

"Who's the broker then?" asked Hasina.

BNP leaders have repeatedly blamed the Awami League for protecting India's interest.

The Ganges water treaty was signed in 1996 when the Awami League came in power for the first time in 21 years after the 1975 coup.

After the 2009 polls, the maritime boundary issues with India and Myanmar were solved.

And after the 2014 elections, the land boundary issue was resolved with India.

Hasina said that the post-1975 government of military dictators Ziaur Rahman, HM Ershad and even Khaleda did not address these matters.

"If they are so patriotic, then why didn't they raise the issues," she said. "They behaved like brokers."

. . .
shameful that a prime minister levels allegation directly naming an external intelligence agency of a friendly neighbour and another friendly country(america)...

.
Just showing off how much she hates RAW...
Would be good justification if pacts are signed..

. .
Interesting.....
May be Parikhar tried to pull her leg too much this time regarding China submarine issue.
Hasina never poke anybody unless she gets agitated.
I have always said, people make her more pro-indian then really she is. Her co-operation with India are calculated move. She knows the power imbalance between India and BD.She has taken strategy to extract maximum benefit from a neighbor which is powerful yet very mean minded and insensitive.BNP talked a lot of hot word against India, but they could not solve a single problem in favor of BD.Sheikh Hasina is solving major bilateral issues one by one mostly in favor of BD.Her next mission is Teesta water treaty. She is on a mission to make BD powerful both on economic and military front. With these power diplomatic power will follow, nobody knows this better then her.

Actually she said the same thing exactly 5 years back:
Regarding her party’s defeat in 2001 polls, Hasina said Pakistani intelligence ISI, Indian intelligence RAW and that of the USA got together when she declined to sell gas without having 50 years of reserve for the country. “As I didn’t agree to sell gas, ISI, RAW and USA got united against us,” she said.

I will take her allegations with pinch of salt, she is a cunning woman trained by Indian RAW while in India having close personal relation with prominent Indian leader. Her allegations probably she wants to draw support from anti Indian population as most of the people believe AL and AL current leader as Indian stooge.

.
But this time she didn't mentioned ISI name. This only prove she used ISI name to lighten her allegation back than while hinting her personal view. This time she mentioned only RAW and America. This prove she doesn't believe ISI was behind her defeat in 2001.This time she is to the point at whom she consider responsible.

Khaleda Zia is a child against Hasina in politics. Politics is the dirtiest game in the known world. Thats why the great Seikh Mujib rightly said, "When you play with gentlemen, you play like a gentle man. But when you play with bastards, make sure you play like a bigger bastard. Otherwise you will lose".

No she didn't mention ISI this time because it would sound crazy if she claimed ISI & RAW united for a cause in 2001.

Some 45 years after the independence, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed her curiosity to know the motive behind some people with the Awami League who pressed Bangabandhu to proclaim independence in his Mar 7 address at the then Race Course Ground in 1971.

Indicating that the risk of being ‘branded’ as 'separatists' in the international arena would have created if Bangabandhu proclaimed independence on that day, Hasina said, "Then who were they (pressuring Bangabandhu)? They were speaking on whose behalf? What were their motives?" she questioned.

The prime minister was speaking at a seminar on the historic address by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

"Those who attack are the criminals under international law. And we cannot become separatists in any way. No goal can be achieved (through separatism)," she said.

Sheikh Hasina spoke, in her words, 'harshly' at the seminar as she recalled the events after the Mar 7 speech.

Hasina, the eldest child of Bangabandhu, went to the Race Course Ground that day in the motorcade of his father. Her sister Sheikh Rehana was also with her.

In her speech, she delineated what she saw after returning home.

“When I entered the house with my father, I saw a group of student leaders, visibly agitated, telling my father, 'what have you done', you did not proclaim the independence. People are disappointed',” she said.

“I just entered to the room when they were telling my father those words. I told them why you all are lying,” Hasina said adding “you know, I can say what I believe in on someone’s face. It’s my habit.”

“I said, 'why you are lying? Where did you find that people are disappointed? In that case, you did not see people',” she added.

“I also told them that on my way back I saw people are excited (about the speech). No one is disappointed. Then why you are giving this misinformation to my father?”

“I told my father not to pay heed to the people who are pressing you for independence proclamation,” the PM recalled.

“I told him straightway, father, don’t believe them because they all are lying. People are rejuvenated with the speech. They are returning with chanting slogans.”

“Valiant Bangalis take up arms, liberate Bangladesh, and Padma-Meghna-Jamuna is our address,” these are the slogans they were chanting.

Sheikh Hasina said that those whom she saw arguing with independence proclamation on that day, many of them left AL and some of them came back.

“There were people who left with the goal to revolutionise the country with scientific socialism,” she said without mentioning any name.

Sirajul Alam Khan, former DUCSU VP ASM Abdur Rab and BCL general secretary Shajahan Siraj founded JaSoD to establish scientific socialism in the country. BCL leader Abdur Razzak had also left the Awami League and then came back to the fold.

“I often wonder why they told my father and the proclamation. I need to think and analyse it because I am a witness of many incidents in that house,” she also said.

She claimed, “It was only Bangabandhu who knew about the strategy of how we can achieve independence.”

“The proclamation statement was ready before Mar 25 night. My father received the message when the Pakistani army entered Dhaka University campus and Rajarbagh Police Lines.”

On that day, Hasina recalled, the proclamation message was sent to EPR from a telephone set placed at the veranda of the library room of No. 32.

“He sent the message to EPR camp from that phone. Shawkat Shaheb (martyr Subedar Shawkat Ali) and three others were present there at that time,” she reminisced.

“They were supposed to spread the messages all across Bangladesh through wireless, telegraph and teleprinter,” Hasina continued.

Sheikh Hasina said Bangabandhu, in Bangali's long struggle for independence, got the mandate of proclaiming the independence through the 1970 elections.

"He checked the people's opinion first. His only reaction to those opposing the election was - 'Let the people decide who is the leader of Bangladesh'. The people's mandate, opinion, permission was necessary," Hasina said.

"The people's mandate went to the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Only he can proclaim independence. He had the authority."

"And we won the War of Independence because his every step was very well-thought out," she said.

The prime minister said Bangabandhu sensing that he might be detained or killed took the preparation for the Liberation War beforehand. "He prepared everything so that everything run properly in his absence."

"Now Bangabandhu is not among us. But Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib is immortal in Bangali's hearts," she added.

Dhaka University sociology Professor Dr Md Mashiur Rahman presented the keynote paper at the seminar organised by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Memorial Trust.

Chief Executive Officer the trust Mashura Hossain also delivered a speech at the programme.

^^^This one is also interesting. Seems like lately she is trying to figure out by whom her family is surrounded and whom are behind the decades long evil game with BD. Dont agree with later part of the article but first part is interesting. I say madam Hasina those people were recruited and utilised by RAW to take revenge against both the people of then West Pakistan and East Pakistan (Bangladesh). Bangladesh suffered more.

.
She is too clever and preparing for the next election.. No doubt that RAW is too much involved in all things in BD.. Such as recruitment of all major post to Hindu personal judges, Police chief and many more..
Also heard that she blames BNP for talks with Israeli to counter her.. But I think Seikh Hasina is too much involved in all this and she is just making the statement as guided by RAW and Mossad...
