Rashid Rauf flees from police custody

ISLAMABAD/LAHORE: Rashid Rauf, a British suspect in an alleged plot to blow up trans-Atlantic jetliners, escaped from police custody in Pakistan on Saturday, officials said.

Rauf, a terrorism suspect in London, escaped from police custody when he was brought to appear before the additional deputy commissioner general from Adiala Jail, sources said.

Two police constables, Nawabzada Ali and Muhammad Tufail, were escorting him, and an FIR has been registered with the Margalla police station against them.

Ali told Daily Times that he tried to chase Rauf but failed. He said he did not shoot at Rauf since it could injure the many people present at the scene. Sources said the constables have been shifted to an unknown place for interrogation.

Rauf, who holds both British and Pakistani nationalities, was wanted by the UK for his alleged involvement in the London plane conspiracy case and was detained in Pakistan under charges of terrorism, forgery and possessing explosives. muhammad bilal/tariq usmani/daily times monitor

There has to be more than what meets the eye since such suspects would have been under strict security and escapes of such people would make heads roll, which I am sure, none would like to happen if one was in charge of such suspects.

I am pretty sure that the guy talked to his captives about the muslim broterhood, and fighting for islam and performing the jihad---just like Musharraf's suicide bomb planner was helped in escaping by the prison guards a year or two ago. It has happened so many times that it is like a comedy act now.

it is indeed intresting as though he is considered a terror suspect, he was being guarded by only two policemen (and not under strict security) according to the news filtering out. And this could be due the fact that all terror charges against Rauf were dropped earlier and he was only accused of possessing forged travel and identity documents and bomb-making materials.

Police said Rauf had managed to open his handcuffs and evade two police guards who were supposed to take him back to jail in Rawalpindi.

“We are still trying to ascertain where he managed to escape,” Shah said, adding it was unclear if Rauf slipped away at the court complex or en route to jail. Since your beloved Nawaz Sahrif is back, may be he hatched this plot when his crony Gen Ziaduddin was chief of ISI and that is how you are aware of the plot!!

For heavens sake man, dont let go of your senses in your hate of Musharraf. No wonder Pakistan is going to the dogs when sane members of this forum start using their backside to rationalize instead of their grey cells.

Obviously Al-Qaeda and Islamic extremists have inside links with the police and the agencies; thanks to the bigot Zia ul Haq and his protege Nawaz Sharif, who used to vow to contnue his policies on each of Zia's death anniversary; but to think that ISI will actively participate in blowing up of a passenger plane goes even beyond a fool's fancy.

Hi,

The newspaper Dawn states that Rauf wanted to say prayers in a mosque on his way back from the courts. So, the vehicle was stopped and his hand cuffs removed----and then he escaped.

Truly, our police force personale have a very hard time understanding this concept of securing the prisoners. Religion again became a part of the issue when Rauf's uncle requested to remove the shackles so Rauf could go to the mosque which was situated on the way back from the court.
