RIP.

this accident is strikingly similar to the Sampoong department store collapse in South Korea in the 90's, in both cases signs of collapse were observed but people were not alerted and still allowed to enter the buildings. hope the authorities can find the cause and prevent such tragedy from happening again.

I couldn't look at the pics.. It is so brutal, so heartbreaking.. This BAL leader Rana (owner of the building) should be hanged for killing all those poor human. RIP.

Its not just owner and BAL leader Rana, entire Awami League guilty of their crime. Awami Leaders forced these workers to come and prepare them to be used as shield against anti regime mass movement.

RIP to dead but please guys, don't post graphic photos.

yeah also know that, owner of the building rana is awamileague leader. this is not accident. this is cold blooded murder. there was crack yesterday but the workers werenot allowed to leave. shame on the govt.

Was the building owner also the factory owner?

No, no. The building is not owned by any garments fatory. It is owned by some irresponsible Rana. Many owners mistakenly think a building can stand well on its feet whatever may be the subsoil conditions, lengths/diameters of piles, strengths of superstructure consisting of columns, beams and floors. In many other cases, owners force the designer and contractor to reduce the sizes of columns, beams and floors, and reduce the area of steel bars in order to reduce the cost.

Yet, in some other cases, the designers do not follow the design rules set out in the US design codes like ACI, ASTM, ASCE or ANSI, or similar British codes and standards. Most of them in BD do not even know that these standards exist. For example, the ACI code specifies the live or imposed load on the floors to be 400kg/m2 for public buildings like cinema, theater, shopping center, office buildings etc. where a heavy concentration of human movements are expected many times in a day.

I doubt, the design engineers or the owners care much about these things. Their moto is 'There will be no problem,' but then there are collapses like this.

are u a civvie engr ????
@tpoic : RIP to the dead. i wonder whats going with the families of the untimely deceased, especially the ones where the dead was the sole breadwinner.

the owner of the building Rana a leader of govt party few years back illegally occupy a Hindu mans land by force and constructed the 8 floor bulling taking permission for 6 floor .

The comments above by the Home Minister MoKha Alamgir is one of the most irresponsible that a man of letter can utter. He is trying to save Rana, his party colleague, by talking imaginative things. Rana has certainly broken laws by building top floors without getting permission. After seeing the pictures, it seems only the top floors gave away and crushed down.

As far as news is circulating it was designed to be a 8-storied Shopping complex cum office space. Insteada Rana rented them to Garments factories and all by his own decision erected two floors further. This guy should be killed by dropping one of his buildings slabs over him.
